Comand Stolen

MB explain absence of deadlocks by stating that they would impede emergency services trying to gain access after an accident.

And yet Mercedes UK Customer Services' official response to my question "Why can I not get Keyless Go on a C207 E-Class Coupe (or W212 Saloon) in the UK?" is that Keyless Go is incompatible with the cars' deadlocks fitted to get a high Thatcham rating!

If the screws holding the head unit in were missing, would it move/rattle around whilst driving, or give any other clue if missing, like ill fitment?

Were the screws on the carpet, would a thief take the screws with him/her?

Yes it would slide out during acceleration and move a bit.

The screws dont actually come out on these. They are retained in the trim below as they simply draw the locking mechanisim up!

So if they have somehow found a way to move the locking mechanism down without removing the panels and turning the screws then the unit would just slide out as there is nothing else holding it in.

id agree with npuk, maybe something slid in where the locking mechenisms are would enable it to be slid out, in which case under 30 secs would be viable!

time to fit additional brackets on mine to secure in me thinks, reminds me of the old days when my carused to be parked in the street and my head unit had to be bolted in and air horns attached inside and out on the alarm!

May be you should count your blessings for the fact that it was easy to get out? If you bolted it in, they would've done a lot more damage to get it out. Most of these low life thugs damage on purpose, if have problems extracting what they want.

that poses a problem on do i get a new one and let it happen again
or bolt it in and have the dash demolished.
you just can`t win can you

Has the car been Valet parked, or left to be carwashed (and open) in the last few weeks ?

I ask because if someone was breaking in to steal this, I think they would immediately start by pulling up the gear lever surround, rather than trying to lever it out - unless they knew it was not screwed in.
Or as some other poster says, I wonder it it is possible to access the screws above with the CDC compartment open - I have never checked, but anyone else with a W211 may like to shine a torch upwards and see if they can see some screws going into the bottom of the comand (well, they slide those metal bars in the picture) ..

Also, was the Navigation drive from the boot taken too ? If you look on eBay most sales of units are head unit + navigation drive, so it seems strange someone would break in and not take that if they had just picked any old E class with COMAND.

Sorry to hear about your theft - I sympathise with you as a victim of crime myself.

My comand system (comand 2.0) quite literally falls out of the dash - you just need the 2 special pull keys for it and off you go.....however, it has so much stuff wired into it on locking connectors, I don't think your average joe would get away with it before I was up and at 'em.....with our very placid dog.....

The ML is different.. with an ML the comand comes out in a few seconds... the W211 is not like that... it takes the trained at least 10 minutes...

I am in the "whoever last serviced it" camp..

it was just the head unit that was stolen and it has not being left anyware in the last 6 months, and that was someone i know so that avenue seems unlikely, Even the police are surprised when they come to finger print (no prints found surprise surprise)
I am the only person who drives the car.
now it has being a few days since it happend i am still certain of the time scale and everything else ,If you look at the photo i posted you can still see the cradle in the opening i dont no if this was suposed to hold it in but even that seems undamaged.
The bad news is that it had a max and paddy dvd left inside:D life wont be the same again,:D

once again thanks for all your replies, will keep you posted
