Hi all,

I have a 1999 E55 with the standard audio 10 radio/cd player installed. I have the chance of purchasing a comand unit and cd for satelite navigation. I want to know if I have to remove my old audio 10 and install the comand unit, or do I fit both units and in any case does the comand unit play my music cd's or is the cd entrance just for the sat nav cd.

Can anyone help please?

Sure you need to remove the Audio 10 device. Would be better to have a CD changer for audio if this is a CD Navigation device, you would need the CD slot when using the Navigation feature.

I have been reading up about Comand with a view to getting fitted in my W209 (2003). I hadn't realised that using the Navigation tied up the CD slot completely...

First, I'm not familiar with all different MB Navigation options but those that have a single disk drive and integrated navi processor at the HU, the CD/DVD needs to be present because the device cannot read and store all the info for future use (only the latest models that have a hard disk can do it). Some devices at least allow you to remove the disk once you have the route calculated but in this case you are not allowed to depart from the planned route because the device does not have data to calculate a new route. Theoretically you could play music while driving but I do not consider it practical (perhaps it is just me who isn't always following the navi guidance :o ).

Those that have a separate navi processor and navi disk drive, like the W211 has at the boot (excluding the very latest HD model), allow music CDs in the front drive while maintaining full navi operation.

The CD/DVD changer of course always allows parallel music playing.
