HI There,
I changed all 4 tyres on my GLE about a year ago. I took the car to MOT today, but it failed MOT as rear-left and front-left tyres have a cut each. I have been recommended to changes the 2 tyres. Can I get a new tyres on rear/front left side while keeping tyres on front/rear on the right side? I have only done 8K miles on tyres. Therefore, it would be expensive to change all 4 tyres. Any advice would be great.

Yes you can. If it bothers you, if they're the same wheel/tyre size on all four wheels you could put the two worn tyres on the same axle.

Thanks !! No, they aren't of the same size. I will go ahead with replacing 1 tyre on each axle

I personally would not do that but that's down to you. How much thread is left on the two used good tyres against two brand new tyres ?

5/4/4 on rear. 3/4/3 on front.

I am of the belief that your good front tyres is close to changing and the rear is not far off changing. You must remember that you will always have the problem as the old tyre on the axle will wear out before the new tyre.
Tyres are so important and effect the overall handling of the car and especially breaking that i don't think that the risk is worth taking.

Others members on the site might not agree with my comment but you have to drive the car.

I agree.

As a suggestion, replace all four now and keep the part-worn front and rear tyres in the shed so they can be re-mounted in an emergency if one of the new set gets damaged.

Yes, it's expensive to change all four tyres at once. But what price do you put on your car's occupants and other road users near you?

Mixing old and new tyres on the same axle is not recommended because it creates an imbalance in grip and traction, potentially leading to unpredictable handling, compromised braking, and increased risk of losing control of the vehicle, especially in slippery conditions; essentially, one tyre will grip the road differently than the other, causing uneven wear and potentially dangerous driving situations.

It's illegal to put different brands or models of tyres on the same axle. So if you choose to just buy two new tyres you'll be limited to matching those that you already have fitted. These may not be the best value available.

Don't do it.

no its not illegal to mix tyre makes.

But neither is it illegal to drive on tyres with a depth of 1.6mm, despite them being dangerous in the wet!

gets even worse, its only 1mm on a bike

ive not had my C class long but the seller said all 4 tyres where good !!!! fronts are ok for a while but the N/S/R was at 1.5mm and the O/S/R was just under 3mm !!!!!! so had a new pair fitted yesterday, ok they are only budgets but at least they match and have plenty of tread.

Fit 2 part worns this time , then do all 4 when required.

Mixing radial and cross ply tyres on same axel makes the car undriveable.
Cross ply on front and radials on back also make a car undriveable.
The above include FWD cars
Cross ply on front and radials on back is OK. Have done it years ago, pretty good handling.
