My windscreen wipers and hazard warning lights have taken on a life of their own. When driving my 97 C Class 180 the wipers will come on even though they are switched off and now my hazard warning lights and interior lights are doing the same when the car is parked up in my garage with the ignition switched off. Some kind bloke from a mercedes breakers has told me it's the combination relay and I just wanted to know if this correct before I shell out £50 plus vat and postage on it.

Any help much appreciated as i'm stuck driving a bloody Ford until I can get this sorted :(

If its affecting all those things then there is a good chance he's right.

Check to see if your rear heated screen works okay too.

The heated rear screen takes forever to demist these days also :( I guess it's the combo relay then.

Check the price of a new one from Merc first. I would be inclined to get a new one if they aren't too expensive.

I just whipped the bonnet open and noticed an a***ole AA bloke had not connected the alarm cable back properly and now everything seems to be fine  Could this have been the problem?

It could have been the auxiliary supply, which would affect many items.;)

Spoke too soon. Just took it out for a run and the hazards are coming on by themselves again

The bloody wipers are coming on again now  This is really starting to p*** me off to no end now. I've changed the combination relay so it can't be this. The hazards are sorted but the wipers come on by themselves now even though they are switched off. Does anyone have any ideas please? I'm tearing what little hair I have left out now.

My wiper and indicators started playing up about a year ago, checked the relay and gave the contacts a bit of a clean, worked for a month or so, then started playing up again. Decided to buy a new one, about £60 from memory. Wiper and indicators all behaving well since then.

Is this the combination relay or another relay?

Must be carefull on this as the ignition switches can give the same symptons as the multi function relay, like loss of wipers, indicators, seeing that yours does it with the ignition off, then I think that yours is the relay.

The multi N10 relays cost £140 new, they are easy to open and re solder all of the connections. I had a 129 in a while back for the same thing, the guy bought a new relay and still had the same problems, it was the ignition switch. quite common on the 124 cars.

Dont forget that there are modified lids, large and small for you fuse box under the bonnet to keep water out

The wipers don't come on when the ignition is switched off, just when i'm driving or parked up but with the ignition on. The interior light has stopped coming on when the ignition is switched off but these bloody wipers are p***ing me off now. Maybe I got a dodgy combination relay? What else should I try?

Try another relay, if you can.

Another thing to do is to look for damage to the wiring underneath the relay socket.
