Just about to update my NTG 4 in my 2011 c-class with 2014/15 maps...Have seen it takes the best part of 2 hours to complete.

Question is...Is it safe to connect my RAC battery charger to the car battery whilst the update is running with the ignition of the car on, i plan to use it in trickle charge mode so would be pumping in around 4amps at most...

Safe or am i going to fuse my car by doing this?

Want to avoid having engine running for 2 hours.

Start the engine, connect the battery charger, switch the engine off but leave the ignition on - that way you avoid the possibility of spiking the SAM when you turn the battery charger on. Done it twice to my s204 without problem.

Can't PM you yet as you have only 27 posts, but get to PM enabled and give me a buzz about how you get on - and what you plan to do with the DVD's - or if you can from my profile, email me.

will do....il let you know if it works first of all haha

2 other thoughts :
1. Reason for ignition on is to stop Comand shutting down. If it does, when you turn the ignition back on it will resume the update, so it's not terminal
2. Hope you've got genuine MB DVD's - OK, there are reports from people that have updated with "aftermarket" updates successfully, but there are many reports of aftermarket discs causing problems ranging from "did not work" to "bricked my Comand" - just ask Alfie or Richard at comandonline!

Not quite the same thing, but when I updated the maps on my NTG 2.5, I didn't bother with leaving the ignition on. Simply made sure that my battery was in good nick after a long motorway drive and just let the update to take its course. Two hours and 3 (or was it four) restarts later the maps on the hard drive were updated successfully.

The NTG 2.5 resumed the update automatically each time I restarted it following its auto shutdown.

Cheers thats good to know. Yup just spent £158 bucks at command online for new discs ...Did not want to risk the illegal downloaded torrent ones seen way to many people with bricked units..At least this way i can always pass them on and reclaim some cash from it. The way i have worked it out is that the Map update will prob cost me somewhere in the region of 40-50 squids all being well.

quick question fellas. Have command updating now with the ignition on... Got a long trip to do in a bit, can i start the car and drive off with it installing without messing it up?

Seen in the literature only to do it when stationary but il be running out of time. Prefer to do it on my motorway stint later?

Last W204 NTG4 i did, it stopped when it was driven and had to restart when stationary.
