Hi all.

I'm looking at a used 2019 A180d Sport Executive, 1.5 litre engine with auto gearbox on 29k. This is going to potentially be my first Mercedes since my parents owned a 190E, 30 years ago. I've previously had BMWs, but after a local dealership smashed up my 6GT whilst in for a service, I've decided to never have a BMW again. I've got a new Skoda Superb, which is mainly used for family duties and this is for a small runaround. Can anyone give me some advice, or things to look out for?

Check for interior squeaks and rattles. Most don’t have any issues with that, but some do and it will drive you crackers if you get one that does.

Check that the aircon & automatic temperature control work properly. There were quite a few cars that the temperature sensor in the overhead console went faulty.

Check for a light knock from the front end over low speed bumps. Some early cars needed the strut top mounts replaced to stop this.

All W177’s have limited ground clearance and will ground out relatively easily over speed bumps so check the engine undertray for damage. Scrapes are common; holes and missing bits mean it’s hit the ground hard at sometime.

Other than the above, they’re a great car to own and drive.

You have ruled out buying a BMW indefinitely because of the mistake of one dealer?

It was a £6,500 mistake which they then attempted to cover up. They reversed my car into a ramp and then tried to hand it back hoping I’d not spot the damage. I know this was primarily the local dealership but BMW UK were also less than useless and only legal action saw the situation resolved. It dragged on for 8 months without the car. But it’s certainly left a very sour taste - it was a shame because I’d been considering an i4.

I'd buy a Renault for half the money!

Sadly, it's too late for a Renault. Went for a test drive today and loved it - so I bought it. I'm due to pick it up in a few days time.
Congratulations. I’m sure you’ll be delighted with it 👌🏻👍🏻
