Can't find the original thread, so the latest after a day at the dealers is.

Fault was the same as last time - so the split vacum hoses might well have helped trigger it but something else did this time.
Fault still points towards the EGR valve as being the issue, however it passes it's self test and all the flap position tests so they don't think it's that.
Full vacum system test completed and it's all right and no leaks.

So they are clearing the fault, giving us the car back and waiting to see if it happens again - and when it does they'll take another look....

Bit unimpressed - though at least they tested the EGR this time.

They suggested it's either going to be EGR or MAF - so the question is, can either of these put the engine into limp mode or bring up the CEL or is the CEL based purely on the injector/O2 readings from the lambda?

Cheers,
Dan.

Yes both of those can put the warning lamp on

Although both of them pass self-test OK. Saw the test paperwork/results this morning - and even the exhaust gas monitor vs. EGR position tests are fine.....:wallbash:

Anyway, we've got the car back and have been told to drive it normally and as soon as it goes into limp or the CEL comes on again to go straight in and they'll look at it live...

Wait and see what happens!

Cheers,
Dan.

Well it went back to the garage less than 5 hours after leaving as the light came back on again and it went into limp mode - and the EGR is reporting a fault. Waiting to hear now what their plan is - as they still aren't convinced that it's the problem....

Cheers,
Dan.

Ah, maybe a result. They've just called to say on further dis-mantling, it's the EGR valve - it's sticking, and while it passes its self-test, it is sticking in certain positions causing the light to come on.

It's been replaced, and they've already done a few journeys in it and it's looking good. They'd run a couple more journeys tomorrow and then give me a call to go and collect it.

Hurrah!

Got the car back last night after a surprisingly reasonable repair - I was prepared for 2-300 quid for an EGR valve plus a couple of hours fitting it. They reviewed the situation and given the problems only lifted £140 off me to the part AND the fitting.

Car sounds totally different now, it's lost the intermittent rough idle, it no longer sounds like it's struggling to breathe, and it's a lot quieter and pulls better.

Makes me think the valve has been shot since we got it, and that's annoying because I reported all that to the dealer we bought it from and they allegedly sorted it out under warranty....so that either means EGR valves only last 2.5 years, or, they didn't actually sort it out at all before.

Oh well, it's back and back on top form - hurrah - happy wife!

Cheers for the pointers all.

D.
