Hi

I'm about to flush my C32 coolant again and wanted to know if there is any 'performance' difference between coolants ie: will one stay cooler than another? and can it affect the overall performance/ acceleration/ pick-up of the vehicle?

Thanks

James

Coolant is water based and as such it has the properties of water and steam under pressure. The differences in coolants are down to the rust inhibitors etc.

You can get long life coolant in newer MB models with better rust inhibitors. Might be worth getting that.

The main performance difference is the lowest temperature the mix can go down to in winter without freezing and cracking your block . Concentrations and safe temperatures are normally detailed on the bottles .

Traditional coolant is a mixture of 50% Ethylene Glycol and 50% water.

Ethylene Glycol has higher boiling point and lower freezing point than water, but water transfer heat better, so 50-50 is about right - though in fact if you go over two-thirds Ethylene Glycol cooling performance is actually worse.

The corrosion inhibitors and just an additive, and while very important by themselves they only account for a small portion of the total coolant.

Pressurising the system causes the water boiling temperature to go higher above 100 degrees.

your's may have had the long life coolant (15 years) so no flushing required on those.

You should buy from merc as their coolant is appropriate to the cooling circuits of the engine and is ph neutral and therefore will not eat into the various metals and rubbers in the circuits and cause that sludge you often see.

Give your full VIN to parts person and he/she will provide the proper coolant
for your car circuits.

sigh
