Hi all

I have a message that keeps telling me to top up the engine coolant. I top it up but it keep needing a top up. I cannot find any spill under the car and does not look like any staining on the engine. Anyone got any ideas as to the problem? It is using coolant and the car has only done 45K 2010 model C Class.

Cheers

In a older car if say head gasket depending on other symptoms. However in this case I'd probably make the heater matrix my first port of call if there are no obvious leaks under the car or under the bonnet. Check the footwells of the car for moisture particularly front passenger side. You may need to lift carpets to do this. If you have any moisture/water there it's prob a heater matrix leak. Other possibilities are also simple ones lol me is the cap for the expansion tank and radiator right? Is the rubber gasket seal under the caps ok?

Ok mate many thanks, I will go and have a look :)

Other options include:

Faulty expansion bottle cap releasing pressure too early.

Small leak onto exhaust which evaporates.

Just looked under torch light whilst topping up header tank, looks like there is fluid further down on and around engine, will prob take into a garage. Bit disappointed to be honest at a car that has only done 45k!

Water pump is the usual failure on these engines.

Mmmm sounds expensive :(

That would be my guess too. It can leak out so slowly you hardly notice it until it becomes obvious. It isn't a hugely expensive job at an indy either.

It was the water cooler, getting done tomorrow, the pump itself is £180 + vat, but got to be done :(

Is that the water pump? I've not heard of the term "water cooler" used before.

That must be "stealer" price as a new pump shouldn't be that much surely?
