Hi All,
So a few months ago, I started getting vibrations from the bottom of the car when accelerating. My car is well maintained, I use it for driving all over the UK and regular trips to Europe for work so I can't have it breaking down due to being poorly maintained. It is on 07 E280 CDI with 240,000 miles on it.
Initially thought it might be the gearbox bush...so changed this, then the engine mounts that were fairly shot....a little improvement but nothing spectacular.
The gearbox had been serviced (Oil/Filter) earlier in the year so I didn't think it would be that.
Took it to an indy a couple of weeks ago and was diagnosed as the torque converter. Bought a used one from a reputable breaker who I have used for years, from an 09 car with 66k on the clock so should be fairly reliable. Had it changed over with new oil and filter as well as the solenoid and reprogrammed. Picked it up and ran like a dream apart from abrupt gear changes as the gearbox relearns my driving style.
Had a couple of long runs in the car totalling around 1000 miles and suddenly as I was sitting on the motorway the vibrations started again, progressively getting worse. I understand the torque converter kicks in at 1400 rpm and when sitting at motorway speeds I am constantly around that so the 300 mile trip back home was rather annoying. Took it back to the indy yesterday and they said it could be the programming hasn't taken and they would do it again.
They have just called me to say they haven't fixed the problem and they spoke to a transmission specialist, and they stated this can sometimes happen where one issue is actually masking another and the gearbox may need refurbed/rebuilt.
Looking for some advice from anyone who might know, as I have now spent over £1k on the gearbox this year and I am no further forward. I have actually spent more than the car is worth this year but I love my old merc and don't really want to get rid, but neither do I want to spend anymore than I need to, to keep it on the road. Whilst it high mileage, it only ever really sits at motorway cruising speed for 90% of it's life so the actual load on the car has been limited.
Anyone had a similar problem or can offer any advice?
Thanks in advance,
Dougie
