hi

my aftermarket backbox on my W124 has always rubbed a bit on the body, which creates a nasty rattle.

i have to take the exhaust off anyway soon for another job so my plan was to cut an inch out of the pipe and rejoin which will fix it.

however, i'm looking for a cheap way of doing it. i can weld so do i just cut and weld it back together? ideally i'd like to avoid that and just join it with some sort of slightly larger collar or something

can anyone advise where to get one? i searched online but could only find stuff for £40+ which is too much, i dont think the whole backbox was that much! lol

Not sure where to go...but when I had to modify the exhaust on my wife's RAV4 Kwik Fit had what I needed...free.

good point; MOT due next weekend - i may enquire politely when there... see if they have something

If you have to take the exhaust off any way its got to be easiest to just make your modifications and weld it back up job done!

Tony.

Try searching for "exhaust reducer" on eBay. The second item that came up on mine was a firm that will make you one to measure for £8.75 including postage. I didn't bother looking any further, but there will no doubt be loads more.

If i am reading right its a length issue not diameter.

Back in the day it was a bit of Oxo tin and a couple of Jubilee clips...........;)

More seriously, you say it's an aftermarket backbox, so isn't there an overlap join in the system already that can be undone, pipe shortened, and the joint remade?

I knew it was not a diameter issue; the firm will make any size required to order.

So will the one found by Silversaloon. Take your pick.

Sorry just when you mentioned reducer i thought that is what you meant!

I cut a section off an old ammo box to repair a snapped section of my wifes Beemer 320D a couple of years ago. Secured with D clamps as modern zorsts
seem to be made up of an alloy or the galvanize coating which doesn't help the welding process. Repair is on an origional 2002 exhaust and has passed two tests.
