Hi everyone. I wonder if anyone out there can advise me? And sorry, this is a bit long...
Car: C240, about 114K. No real problems until recently.
Car runs fine at speed, but sometimes, when I'm in a queue at the lights, the engine will just stop. All dash lights on, no engine. And then it won't start. If you leave it about 20 minutes, it starts OK, no more problems maybe for a week or more. Then it does it again. On rare occasions, it will cut out when I'm parking it after a drive of 30 miles or so, and won't restart until it's had a 'rest'. This doesn't seem to happen when it's cold.
Yesterday it cut out in a queue in the M1. Traffic started moving, and I was stranded in the middle lane (scary). Some good Samaritans rescued me (thanks guys) and pushed me to the hard shoulder. After a short rest, off it went again. I carried on, this time off motorway, but it then failed again at some traffic lights. I called the AA and guess what it started fine when the guy got there, running very sweetly. He told me I'd got an 'intermittent fault' that would need heavy dianostics to sort out. He was right - within 300 yards it failed again. This time I had to be recovered - but by the time the recovery truck got there, it could be driven on to the platform! And on getting home, it could be driven off and parked. I'd have taken it to a MB agent in the first place, but they were all closed by that time.
About a month ago the throttle control unit was changed, and this improved the car's driving and the problem subsided. But clearly it's come back. It's been to my local specialist several times, and they can't diagnose a problem with their software (I don't think its the most advance MB software), so I think I'm stuck now. I think it's too risky to drive, since it has now failed 3 times in about 100 miles or so. Looks like a main dealer (at vast expense I guess). I suppose they can come and pick it up (again, vast expense) - anyone any experience of this?
Can anyone out there give me a clue as to what the fault might be (and what the dealer might charge). It will have to be done, but I wonder if I'll need to take out a second mortgage!
My car was registered in April 1998, so it's not covered by Mobilolife unfortuantely.
Many thanks...
Richard
