Hi

I'm thinking of fitting Digital Radio in my car (i have already fitted proper BMW Digital TV so i can watch "price drop tv" in the car lol.

anyway; apparently a digital radio bmw DAB system is too complicated to retrofit on these cars; so my only option is an aftermarket jobbie....

i have come across this:

http://www.revo.co.uk/digital-radio/specs.php

it sounds good as it plugs into the aerial connector on the back of the radio but was wondering if anyone else knows more about it/has one or knows of a better solution???

user manual & fitting instructions are here:

http://www.revo.co.uk/downloads/revoguide.pdf

just got to figure out where the main display unit will go as i dont like non-OEM devices on show - but if it can be neatly fitted it will be ok - i am hoping it may even fit in the ashtray area of the 7er - i dont like external wires on show

cheers!!

I thought about Revo but I reckon a hidden unit with AV output would be a cleaner installation.

unfortuantly the 7 series (and other i-drive run BMWs) dont have any Aux Input into the audio system :(

I have this in my car, attached to Mercedes Comand 2.5. It's pretty good and so are Revo customer service. The Revo works through an FM modulator and as soon as the Revo is turned on the modulator senses the input and disconnects the aerial to stop interference. Of course the S class has two aerials so this is largely irrelevant.

The actual unit is small and I managed to fit it in a storage compartment in front of the gearlever. When I bought mine from dabs.com

http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0

there was also a card in the box for a free remote. The sound is pretty good and would probably be better if it wasn't through a modulator. The supplied aerial is a bit naff and I bought a better one from revo at cost (I complained about poor reception, see what I mean about good customer service?).

thanks stargazerplus - thats £100 u've saved me!!1

i am hoping that the updated RFAMP aerial i need to fit to get a good digitial TV picture will also work with the radio - i am pretty sure the radio uses the same aerials as the TV so i may get away with just using the standard aerial as it is amplified before it reaches the radio, otherwise i'll see what the supplied aerial is like.

Do you have any pictures of the system fitted to your S class? I have two possible places to put it in on my BMW; either the drawer in the centre console or where the ashtray is - i am not 100% sure it will fit in these places yet though and also i need to be able to wire it in from these points too without damaging existing dash/pannelling.

Why do you need DAB when you have the Digital TV tuner? Can you not get all the radio stations on that?

If looking for after-market DAB then you should not miss the Truck Box www.starwaves.com

THis box covers VHF DAB and L-Band DAB as well as the HF Bands from 150KHz-30MHz in AM and DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) www.drm.org

It has a clever remote integration using RDS on an FM and a remote control.

It costs only €249 from Germany.

I thought the i Drive cars had a hidden aux input on the rear of the unit? The 530 M Sport definitely does as that's how my Nephew routes his Ipod.

dab dont sell the revo anymore and the link to the revo site is broken too. I was looking at the pure highway, has anyone linked this through the aux on command ntg2?

We have hooked up a DAB tuner, cant remember which make, via the cigarette lighter sockect (hidden) and the AUX port on a W211 with NTG2. NTG2 would be just as easy.

Currently working on an integrated DAB tuner

Hi Alfie,

I know you've been working on the DAB solution for a while, any update? With FM now having a switchoff date of 2015 I suppose its even more relevant.

From Digitalradiotech:

A lot of people are under the mis-conception that because analogue TV will be switched off in 2012 that also means that FM and AM radio will be switched off in 2012 as well. This is not correct, because as you will be able to read below, no date has been set for FM to be switched off by -- there hasn't even been a date set for AM to be switched off by. FM will eventually be switched off, but it almost certainly won't be before 2017, and it is more likely to be in around 2020.

I have a pure highway hidden in the first aid kit compartment...works a treat and as I leave it permanently on planet rock, its all hidden from eyes (use the fm modulator function on preset 0 so all my usual fm stations plus planet rock is a preset too........rds reads 'pure dab' on command

cheap and cheerful!

I'm after reading of the actual radio station though and control from the steering wheel; I guess the CAN bus DAB project is dead :(

Hoping to start offering a solution for MOST based cars in a few weeks time.

We have a respected forum member here testing an early unit for us. a few bugs to be ironed out and it should be there.

There are a couple of pictures of how it will look here;
DAB

Rest assured the instant its available it will be announced here first.

Dab

I'm also looking for a dab install on my 2010 model B class 180cdi, at present there is one firm called auto dab and depending on make and year of car they sell a unit which connects to current radio and dab feeds into it via RDS signal and works only from steering controls.
AutoDAB, DAB radio for your car have a look at their website it may help.
