Daily Mail rant over G Wagens

Around here it's VW Transporter vans, every other vehicle is one because they're trendy.

I can't say that they bother me greatly though, in fact I'd quite like one myself.

Must admit , if I couldn't find a nice S124 , a Transporter Window Van or a Caravelle would be a good option - not too many automatic ones around though .

I would really like to see Mercedes subject the G wagon to the Euroncap safety tests for passenger cars. Because its classed as a "commercial vehicle" its never undergone same. I suspect the results might come as a disappointment to some who may have bought it with the idea its a safer vehicle due to its rugged construction and size. I suspect that frontal impact may be OK but the side/pole test would be another matter??
Closest recent info I have found is this:-

There are some DSG equipped versions, the Sportline is very nice but the cost of these is eye-watering.

I wish that I had my 1972 Orange bay window camper back sometimes. (only so I could flog it and buy a newer one!)

I know , I've looked at the price lists :(

I could get one as a lease car through work , but as my personal mileage is quite high it wouldn't make sense for me .

Since neither the SL or the 190 are great load carriers , much as I love them and won't be getting rid , I see another load lugger on the horizon .

I think G Wagons should be banned too, bloody G Wagon drivers in their gas guzzling G Wagons taking up all the car spaces in their G Wagons.

I must be doing something right, as I have a nice S204, and my VW T2 campervan, bought new by myself in 1976.

Evening Tony, thought you had a Porsche as well or was it a Jag?

S204 are nice but S205 better

Those T2 campers are bigger than they look.
Daughter No1 turned up in one that she got for a steal and it dwarves my Jeep.

My friend works as sales admin for the local VW commercial dealer. Apparently there's a fully optioned Caravelle on the forecourt with a sticker price in excess of £50k.

The worst offenders are Tescos when looking at car parking. Our local Morrisons do have a much wider bay configuration.

Now we can understand why some people without kids park in the 'Mother and Child' bays, as these are extremely wide indeed.

Regardless whether you drive a mini sized car, or a tank on tyres, parking should be wide enough not to worry about dinks in your doors.

If people are prepared to pay to drive such vehicles, why discriminate against them. After all, most of us drive Mercs, which are considered ostentatious, yet it is our passion.

Yes , it's scary if you go to the website and tick all the boxes on the configurator .

Even a bog standard van with one of the bigger engines can be thirty grand .

I must admit I quite often take my son to the shops so that I can legitimately use a parent & child space - usually it costs me a Beano or some sweets :)

I don't think taking your 27 year old son qualifies you to use those spaces ;)

It seems rather ironic that they point the finger at the G-wagen, which hasn't changed size for decades, and makes up a miniscule percentage compared to the glut of X5/Q7/Range Rovers. The fact that all cars are getting bigger (the current Polo is the same size as a Mk2 Golf) is deemed almost inconsequential, it's all the 4x4s fault.

Standard Daily Fail then.

Nail on head :thumb:

Strange too, if they want to discuss large 4x4's and parking they never mentioned the proliferation of large people carriers and 4x4's abandoned outside schools. Now that is a problem.

But as you rightly stated, it is the Mail.

He has a valid point. If I get my 70 year old mother to drive, would we qualify to use a 'Mother and Child' parking space, because I am still her child?

May I take this opportunity to praise the typical G Wagon driver?

Despite the pain of driving such a hideously ugly vehicle, you never see one parked in a disabled bay close to an ATM. Range Rovers and X5s, you can always count on taking up a space while the owner doesn't even have the courtesy to offer up a fake limp.

No, I can safely say that G Wagon drivers must be lovely people.
