Damn - gearbox problem - self inflicted maybe?

I am becoming a forum junkie - posted more today than ever - but this might be serious. Car in serious need of a service - no cash - 4k miles overdue. Cash now in hand will be done next week , BUT twicw today auto geerbox has not changed up when it should. ie engine goes up to 3k revs without a gear change - any ideas??:(

Try a search for auto box reset. I remember that Shude posted something a while back. It involved the W/S switch, and moving the selector around.

The dealer will be able to do a reset for you, of course, while it is connected up to the computer.

What happened on my E300TD 99.
Pipes that connect the gearbox to the oil cooler rusted through, resulting in a loss of transmission fluid. There was fluid visible at the bottom of the radiator when looking from above.
Symptoms of low fluid: Slow moving into gear sometimes, reluctance to change up, clutch slip. All got progressively worse over a week or so. Seemed to improve as the transmission warmed up. Worth checking the fluid level, but if its low then its gone somewhere....

Get it sorted quickly. Clutch slip in an auto leads to expensive rebuilds quickly.

to start with, when you take it in for the service , ask them to check the gearbox oil level!! most probably low!

Could be a faulty MAF sensor.
This will reduce the torque output so the engine will hold lower gears longer.

Quetion - especially for dieselman

I used yr info dieselman to sort my reverse lights - now - cpl of days later have this problem with the gearbox

Is it possible that doing this i may have moved - not reconnected - adjusted or done something in any way to cause this problem or is the timing of the 2 just a coincidence. Have had the fluid checked and it is ok - indy will do diagnostics nxt wednesday during service, but any help gratefully recieved in the meantime

It is possible that the selector switch is playing up so holding the box at a set selection. If the ECU detects a fault it will hold the last selected gear to keep the car mobile.

You could always check the switch again.

 seems i did do something wrong   - tried resetting the gearbox as per reset without disconnecting battery - seems to make some difference. Tried tinight to try a manual change - cant select 1 2 3 or 4 - wont go past D - will take it apart saturday and see what i did wrong - dontt know if this will fix the no change ans slipping tho
