I could hear a grinding noise from the rear near side brake (E270 cdi W211) - so I called the dealer and booked it in the next day.

Noting surprising so far - except that the car had been in for a B service (£180 and I provided the oil !! ) only 8 days earlier.

The service manager called - I needed new brake pads and discs on BOTH rear wheels - and wait for it . . . . . . . they offered to do the work and supply the bits for free.

Yes it is a **** up - but the B service is only a visual insepction of the brakes with the wheels still on - but we all make mistakes. To pay the whole bill (some £350 - only £100 in parts though) was good touch. This is the service we expect rom MB - and to be honest the service I have always had from my dealer.

YES I will keep going back.

Could have been very inconvenient - if you were travelling or rely on the car for a long commute, but as it turned out a nice result. They could have easily presented you with a bill.

Nice one

Clearly one of these 'bad' dealers that are everywhere!!

On a serious note is this another case of rear disc's and pad's wearing out before the front's. Or have you have the front's changed recently.

What is the mileage of your car and are you happy about the rear disc pad's wearing out without any indication\notification?

Nice post and nice to hear about good customer relations, perhaps there are lessons for some folks to learn?? ;)

Regards,
John
A stormy lunch-time in Torquay (sunny morning but....)

Don't forget these "good" dealers would be well aware w211's wear the rear brakes heavily and would have ensured the visual inspection was done carefully and removed the wheel if unsure regardless of what the schedule says.

Just becaus ethe dealer recovered well, doesn't mean the sun shines from there behind. Don't be too easily pleased - you were sent away having had MB professionals service your car with worn out brakes

Yes these are the back before the front is repaired.

I think it is a bit unfair to give the dealer a hard time - we all make mistakes, and clearly the engineer servicing the car had done so.

Had they have spotted it 8 days earlier - I would have been charged for the work and would have paid - so to pay for it all is a great piece of service recovery.

;) In a perfect World Graham is clearly right, but in the real World we all know it doesn't work like that. How many times have we read about folks taking their cars to a specialist\independant to have a small problem resolved, and the car owner has had to go back time and time again to get it remedied, and on each visit the owner is charged full independant prices.

I do however accept their are good independant's out there that might do a free repair, but sadly it is not fashionable to report good service.

I am sure the technical bullentin that warned about premature wear of wear (Jonathan Ross moment :o ) disc's mentioned something about a single sensor on one of the rear wheels???

I am still very curious as to the mileage of the rear disc's? Please

Before anyone mentions about why the dealership failed to pick-up on the warning.... would your average independant get all technical service bullentins? A mistake was clearly made by the techician, but the garage have admirably put up their hands and admitted the failure.

The car has just hit 33k miles.

There is a sensor on the wheel, but it is on the inside pad. and it's the outside one that wears first - or vice versa !

Thanks Jonathan,
The sensor issue confirms what I was led to believe. 33,000 miles is certainly not record breaking.

Thanks again,
John

I am sure everyone knows that on the W211 the front pads will automatically connect (lightly) with the discs in wet weather to remove the water, is this the case with the rear pads?
