My thinking is that, if in cages, they would still get thrown around and injured in case of accident or even a panic stop. We have a harness affair that the seat belt goes through and secures them to the rear seat. I don't remember where we got them but I imagine any pet store or online.

We have used pet tubes for years now Dog Bag,Pet Tube,Jet Set,USB (small animal carrier),Marsupack,Pet Carriers,Home Comfort We started of trying one of those hammocks that basically go between the top of the front seat and the top of the back seat bur it was tiresome to install and didn't give any restraint for the dog. Then we tried the collapsable fabric crate but that had to go in the boot which meant luggage was on show in the back and on the back seat.

Then we bought the tune on a whim and it is the only thing we use now. It sits nicely on the back seat, the seat belts go through restraining loops on the back of the tube, each end opens and the flap covers the seat and wheel arch to prevent scratched. It is easy to fold away (collapses in on itself and is secured closed with a zip, ending up about 4"/10cm deep), installs in under a minute and the best bit is the dog has lots of room to move around and to lie down as well as being close and in view.

The solid sections are waterproof (tested-accidents will happen) and the mesh allows our dog to sit upright and look forward between the seats as is her want until we go above about forty and then she goes to sleep.

We got the large which covers the whole bag seat but it can be partially extended to leave one seat available. If you are close enough to me, you are welcome to have a try……..I am not one to recommend everything I buy or service I use but these are excellent products and have no compunction to recommend.

The obvious downside is that the dog is not restrained within the tube but that is a trade off for her comfort generally and her comfort with being being close to us.

I don't know anyone from the company, don't know anyone who works for them and have no stocks or shares in it! Hope this helps.

FWIW, Guide Dogs use cages and they really value their dogs more than people! We've used harnesses as recommended by them.

My view is that there isn't a device designed for animals that offers the same protection as a human in a seatbelt. Guide Dogs want their puppy walkers to use cages or harnesses. We used harnesses and as far as I could see, the use of the harness or cage was to protect the driver from a roaming dog not for accident protection. The tube isn't perfect either, but gives a dog a comfy home and protection in minor events, probably better than cage or harness (which does not control their head and neck and who knows what position they will be in).

When we had a Westie, the front footwell worked brilliantly, and the dog was quite well protected from sharp protrusions except when sheep sniffing from the vents!

Roof rack? Lol.. :)

Cheers,

Gaz

Thanks for all your help guys. Think the pet tube look great! Thanks for the link! Won't need to buy a 4x4 now !!! :-) well until the snow is back

We have two shepherds and use a Barjo cage (which can be divided, but we dont) have used it for 10 years and a succession of dogs. As said tho, in the case of an accident, it would function to contain the dogs rather than protect them.
