Diamond cut refurb or not?

Alloy Refurb: Diamond cut, Black or Silver?

Have them diamond cut but find somewhere that powder coats the lacquer on.

I had this conversation when I had my old S Class. The rims originally were diamond cut but had been sprayed silver, I wanted them cut again so spoke in depth with a local wheel refurbisher.

Most wheels it seems have 'wet lacquer' sprayed onto the wheels, this does not adhere properly to bare metal and in turn goes milky or flakes after 18 months. Especially with regular use, road salt and car washes making it work. It seems increasingly popular for places to now powder coat the colour, cut the wheel and powder coat the lacquer.

These wheels are powder coated, they had a couple of chips after 18 months or so and they didn't lift or tarnish. I received a 12 month warranty on them just like their other powder coated wheels.

Seeing it parked in your garage made me think of the A-team stripping down the unnecessary bits, welding grills, grates, and girders all over it, and then taking down some bad guys. I need help.
Funny you say that Rob. I did The A Team thing in the garage many years ago. But in reverse.

I made an ice cream van out of a military tank. 😁

I think anyone who things that diamond cut wheels in the UK is a good idea clearly drives a summer only car. Sure they look nice when new but even then even the tiniest chip will let airborne moisture under the lacquer and the white stuff will return. Sometimes even changing the wheel with a metal rather than plastic covers socket will be enough to start it.....as clearly happened in the pic above. Should never have been offered on UK cars IMO.

I bought a set of calibre alloys from wheelbase , certain areas were cut , I had them on for one winter and stowed them in the shed till next winter , I couldn't believe the whiteworm that had gotten into them ,just sitting in the shed .

I'd have the wheels powder coated because down the line it will return, Mays well pay once for a job that's gonna be done someday anyways ,rather than twice.

I had mine powder coated in chrome. Actually looks like polished alloy in most lights. 2 years on and they are as good as.

Any photos of said wheels .

You’re a little late with that info. 🤪

Lol.....and today is first day of four days off.....and I'm drinking lager at 6.30 watching my son cricket training on a village cricket green by the sea!....and it's warm and sunny...How much more British can you get?......time for another.....that will fix the grumpyness!
Somebody else beat me to the goldfish question. Glad it wasn't just me!

I love driving a small low-powered hatchback. Making progress by maximising anticipation and maintaining momentum - and also wringing it’s neck - is both a valuable skill and lots of fun, all whilst keeping up with the flow of faster traffic!
I'm finding that with Sue's 1.1 Picanto - it's got guts for an engine that small. See a hill in the distance, drop a cog and go for it (don't tell her.......) Can't remember how long ago I drove a car with 14" wheels and manual change!

If they're only lasting 6-12 months, there's either an issue with the wash procedure/ chemicals used or the work.

The wheels on my W205 were refurbished before sale completed 2 years ago and they're perfect. Only use car shampoo with a wheel mitt after ceramic coating. No brushes, wheel cleaners or fallout removers more than once or twice a year.

Like wise, my 2017 car had the wheels refurbed September of last year, not because of corrosion (5 years old) but kerb damage, I have had it since 2019, they were ceramic coated, and when washed just shampoo and wheel woolies, and small detailing brush.

After I had them refurbed, once again got them ceramic coated, and continue with the same wash formula.

I’ve had the car since 2020. The wheels looked brand new.

I’ve only EVER used a very mild car shampoo on them. 🤷‍♂️

In my experience its the salt and moisture getting in and under through chips and damage that ruins them rather than what they are cleaned with.

Likely more so the quality of the work.

Ive got a few chips and a few kerb marks on my W205 diamond cut wheels. I drive the car all year round including winter and they haven't got any corrosion. Wheel cleaners will make a big difference to the longevity, as will TFR. A good ceramic coat on the wheels would help massively too (Mine are ceramic coated)

TBH I've just taken this now and the wheels are fairly dirty. They were gleaming when I collected the car on Friday. Chuffed with the results.

Thanks for everyones help and comments.
Looks good just needs the caliper painted now 😉
