I'm replacing the diesel pump on my 1997 E300 Turbo diesel. My mechanic set the timing to 14 degrees TDC and locked pump and fitted it. Unfortunately it is running like a pig. It's on 6 cylinders, but it's slow to rev and when drive selected it would hardly move the car. My mechanic spoke to an MB specialist and he said that the TDC should be 17 degrees. Please could anyone tell me if this is could be the problem or could there be any other reason for this.

14 degrees Before TDC or After?

My understanding of the OM605 and 606 engines (you'll have the 606) is that the injection pump timing should be After TDC, not before. If he's set it BTDC then that will explain the fact that she can't pull the skin off of a rice pudding.

There's a few threads on here and Benzworld about setting OM605/606 pump timing if you want to read up on the procedure.

As CRH71 has said, its 14 degrees after ignition TDC. This is for OM605/606. That's the first thing to check with him.

Not sure why he said 17, older diesels where 24 BTDC I think.

Ahem. :o

I repeat the part about 'on No1 cylinder firing stroke'. It could be timed at 14ATDC but with the crank 360deg out. The inj pump runs at 1/2 engine speed. The only certain way to ensure it's correct is to remove the cam cover (nb..not the injector cover) and see if the timing marks on the cams are visible and lined up.
I have that same engine in a 107 and can assure you that 14ATDC is correct for initial timing. The pump can be swung up to 3deg either way on the micrometer adjuster to fine tune things but at 14 the engine will start and run just fine.

Thank you Druk wasn't doubting you. I haven't a clue and I'm stuck between what my mechanic says and your advice. He said he set it at 14 degrees and its running like a pig. I'm just wondering if he rotated the full 360 before setting 14 ATDC. I'm going to print all this out and take this to my mechanic. Thanks too everyone else too.
