Dirty filthy pigs owned my car before me. Look at this air filter and tell me if you have ever seen one worse!

They get like that on Mercs due to the intake facing forwards just behind the grille. Catching the crap is what the filter is there for.

Don't forget diesels tend to dirty the filter a bit more due to sucking full lungfuls every rotation, whereas a petrol only injests a small volume.

I suspect if you measured the pressure drop it would be not significantly different to a clean filter.

I think I have a picture of one that came out of something recently that was so vile I did not even dare touch it with my bare hands. If I can remember I will post the pic.

Thanks DM. I know they get dirtier quicker, but that diodn't get that dirty in 6 months! I used the term 'pigs' because the rest of the car was like a stable as you will know from the previous pics. Bear in mind in those previous pics that a lot of junk was taken out just so we could actually get in!
