Do people get out of your way?

All these comments speak of bad lane discipline. I have been on the M25 on occasion when the inside lane has been the fast lane!! Wonder what the answer is?

Get a bike an split lanes :D

With the S500 people used to move over on the motorway pretty quickly. It was pretty intimidating looking in a rear view mirror.

Now I have the Range Rover people stay out of my way all over the place, especially roundabouts, they give me as much room as I do a truck! It's quite funny actually. With it's All Terrain tyres it looks like it would just run over you I think......

its quite easy to move a car out of the way:
1. Close the gap very quickly
2. Flash your lights
3. Get 3-5ft from their bumper
4. Drift side to side
5. They let you pass
6. You have now qualified as a BMW 316i driver :bannana: :bannana:

I think more effective is the Psycho flash.

Whilst catching upto the car in front flash your lights regularly. The flashing gives the impression you are going faster than you are.

I tend to find that at quiet times (weekend mornings) people will often pull over and let me pass, even when I am not gaining much pace on them. Perhaps it's because they're in less of a rush or weekend morning drivers are more alert, I don't know....

I'm always arguing about this with one of my friends about the appropriate way to induce someone to let you pass.

In my opinion, if you're on the inside lane and want to overtake the car in front, which is dawdling (i.e. not overtaking or keeping up with the traffic), then the most appropriate action is to keep at a reasonable braking distance and leave your right indicator on. This shows your intention without being as forceful as flashing your headlights. I tend to find that after a short while the car in front moves over.

My friend on the other hand thinks that this is being pushy. She thinks it's far more acceptable to flash your headlights at the car in front.

To me, flashing headlights says, "get out of my way now" whereas using your indicator says, "whenever you notice me, I'm here and waiting to pass." Any views?

What a great example of why I like driving a Mercedes. You'd never see a thread on 'whats the politest way to ask someone to move over' on a BMW forum!

This is absolutely true, with no blagging.

I was loaned a new black E55 AMG by DCUK when my day old merc was being inspected by a DCUK engineer from Germany for a serious manufacturing defect issue: this was no doubt to butter me up as my solictor was jumping on them.

Anyhow, I could write pages about that E55: the 'bark' on startup was enough to make my 4 year old burst into tears.

But on the road it was the only car that I have ever driven where BMW drivers got out of the way. And that was without tailgating or agressive driving. Its road presence was absolute power.

Better still was that BMW drivers, and the like, kept well away when approaching from behind the car.

But it had to go back: I was gutted. Worth every penny in my view.

.....Aahhem..! BMW drivers move from knowone..... .. you where probably behind some O.A.P who would have crapped himself if you where a skoda with fog lights on.....:p

I've held back from responding to this thread because I wanted to give an informed response. Most people get out of my way apart from:

1) people carriers/mpvs
2) small cars
3) white van man

Yup, I agree!

From my experiences this weekend driving up and down the M4....the only people not to move out of the way...even after using the 'Police technique'...were Peugeot drivers? I've never experienced that before.

Police technique (for unmarked cars):

Hang back until the driver blocking your lane has an opportunity to move over then,

Accelerate to rear of vehicle blocking your lane

Drop back

Move from side to side to make sure driver sees you in each mirror, then accelerate back to rear of vehicle.

Repeat until they move

If not ram the off the road.

LOL! I added the last bit myself.:D

i find people move out of the way in the merc even when im not driving fast WEIRD. however in the supra id say 80% move out of the way but ther eis the 20% of the people who think they have fast cars (golf GTI's, A4's boy racer crap) who decide they want to race, which annoys the hell outa me cause i try so hard to be sensible but the car encourgaes bad behaviour......

Noticed that people tend to scoot out of the way at night whilst still some way off. Xenons alone seem to have some effect.
