it would have said patient, but i was too impulsive to notice it was too long when i registered . with hindsight i would have gone with alex patient. if only i had been a little more patient......
I often hear the oil/grease versus no oil grease debate, the simple fact is a little oil on the threads will not hurt it at all, will also allow it to come undone in the future.
I always oil my threads and the washers on the nuts (trucks) and have never had any sort of wheel loss incident ever in 20 years.
I watch blokes put them together dry and think of the poor tyre fitter on the side of the road unable to remove the nuts for a blow out/puncture repair.
Most important thing is the couple of drops of oil allows the correct clamping force to be acheived with the the correct nut torque figure of 500 lbsft.
Had something like these on an old Audi TT with a big brake (996) conversion with big wheels and spacer - they were awful and one had GONE rock hard - took an hour or more with penetrating oil etc and big bar to get it off.
Even a little grease will reduce friction, therefore when tightening the bolts you will get more turns and hence a tighter fit. MB say don't use grease for a reason. However, do make sure the threads are very clean so as to reduce the ungreased friction effect.
