How well do you trust your mechanic?

I mean, do you fully trust and leave your car in the hands of a mechanic?

Its just that everytime I have left my car with someone to have some work done, its come back with something else that needs doing.

Not happy.

Yes! It's like most things in life - you find a good one and stick to him/her like glue!

We have the best mechanic, who hasn't touched Edna due to warranty etc, but has helped us out so much over the years that he has become a real friend. He is about to get hold of daughter's car next week and has free rein to do what ever is necessary and we trust him implicitly.

I'm not sure you get that same kind of relationship though through a dealership as you don't usually deal with the mechanics direct :(

I am more than happy so far with the garage I use. It takes time finding a good one then even more time building up a good relationship.

I will soon see when I go in in 2000 miles for a service with a blank cheque and say do what you got to do.

Steve (my local mechanic) has become a friend as well as a mechanic. i'm sure many on here would trust him implicitly! I wouldnt trust my local dealer to top up my windscreen washing fluid:(

And I am still looking for one.

It riles me when mechanics try to pull the wool over your eyes.

I think dealers have made thier own bed and no one except those with more money then sense will trust them.

Its a very hard one where you are at the whim of them and trust them but when they lie or tell porkies... Grr.

Well, will have to find someone else now!!

My local mechanic is very good, not only does he do as I request but he also supplies me with butties and fags. His workmanship is good although he does request answers from time to time on things he doesnt understand. He will work in most weathers using nothing but basic tools. Oh and by the way.................................its me :D

I know this is synical but at some point those we trust betray us, be it an inconsequential or major betrayal. I find that you take the good with the bad all the losses you incur due to dodgy dealers/mechanics etc you get back in otherways like not getting run over next tuesday because you had to go argue your servicing bill down...lol.

That is such a sad expectation of life and people. Some people will betray you yes - but not all.

Sad but true :(

So far with my local mechanic (MERX) I would trust him completely even the guy who does the MOT (The car has to be sent away to another garage who just does only MOT's nothing else)3 out of 4 times the car has passed without a problem and the 4th time needed new ball joints.Oh and I only get charged £20 for the MOT.Half decent courtesy cars as well with any work that needs doing that cant be done while you wait

Once there was a garage that I used all the time when I had other cars,I worked in an adjacent building.Relativly good work but sometimes had nagging doubts that when something else went wrong within a couple of weeks of it leaving the garage that there might be more to it but could never prove it.Eventually stopped using it and my wallet began to swell up again with money :D

See I have this same problem.

My car was perfect upto the point where i blew the sam module.

Since that repair, I have had a few problems that seem to invent themselves when I pick my car up.

e.g. sam module repaired upon pickup, misfire which became a lot worse. Rougth gear change etc. Had to take my car back three times to get the sam adapted to my car correctly.

yesterday - change and replace springs and suddenly a squeaking noise from the rear kinda like a leaking shock. Damaged alloy.

My car is due for an mot in a week or so am waiting to see what happens. Last year my car sailed through with no faults.

This year, I am not as confident and say 6k miles later wonder what I discover.

I am one of those

I trust mine (Ray & thre crew @ S&R) 100%. Even though I now live 130 miles away from them, they will continue to look after my cars. I have become friends with them all and they have done me many a good turn over the years. How many mechanics would carry out an emergency MOT on a Good Friday because I'd got my dates mixed up??

Trust my mecchanic with all my cars :D

Hes a elderly man of Spanish origin, lived here something like 40 odd years, still speaks with a spanish accent; and is amazing with cars. He loves to go on and on about the tiniest thing, and you can waste hours when you go there with a car just being "taught" on how to repair the problems yourself...

He was a mecchanic, now hes retired, but will work on the cars of his friends (and his friends friends :) ). The billing is done through his sons company, and his doc told him to stop working (he had a stroke); he refused saying cars were his life. Now he works 4/5 hours a day, so he isn't the speediest fellow, but he will get the job done.

A point to notice is that the other day as I was driving past his house (he works from his house, he has a nice large outdoor garage where he works) a SLK 55AMG drove out... the one with the large "tooth" in front... sigh... lovely....

There are two brothers and a mate who specialise in range and land rovers that I was introduced to when I owned an overfinch range rover that was based on a 1993 lse model. That was the most expensive vehicle that I have ever owned as there was always something going wrong with it. Wish I had never bought it in the first place. Pads every 10,000miles discs every 20,000 miles and 12 mpg. The brothers are into steam engines and old scammel lorries. They are all petrol heads and Graham the mate looks after most of my other cars. For most of the work that Graham does I buy him dinner. e.g. I had a bad fuel leak on the Brabus from around the fuel tank area. Graham came round on a Saturday with some tools and a pair of car ramps so that we could get the car up in the air and establish where the leak was coming from. I had to laugh as it seemed bizar taking car ramps and tools out of the boot of his Bentley Turbo. Thats the one thing that dissapoints, the Brabus does not have that luxury Rolls Royce/Bentley interior smell.

How do you become friends with a mechanic...??... these guys are experts at manipulation ...and who starts the friendship ???..i dont believe for one minute these guys are your friends, you the punter are their source of income, you put the food on their families table....and as for S and R motors they are experts at being everybodys friend, cups of tea, light banter, warm pleasant nature..." oh and by the way sir wev e just checked your blahh ..blahblah and its gonna cost you 600 quid to put right  ....."......but they're my friends i hear you say, so they must be ok... :)

All friends, indeed all relationships, not just mechanics, require looking after. If you expect to take, take, take from any relationship then Yes, eventually you will get let down when the other person has had enough. But if you try to give in any relationship you might find you earn loyalty, respect, trust and life might be a bit more fun ......even in your relationship with a mechanic. As for "Now lets just wait for all the comments that come back defending their "friends"...". Friends dont need defending, their actions speak louder then words.

In the "imortal" words of Michael Jackons, "If you wanna make the world a better place, just look at yourself and make that change"
