Does anyone know this 280 SL?

Hi,

My mum used to own a 1972 280 SL that was her wedding present from my dad to her. They bought it around the summer of '82 and it was driven for several years.

Eventually there were some issues with rot in the floor pan and sills so my Dad began to undertake a restoration project at some point but I was very young at this time. I do have memories of it being stripped out and playing in it whilst pretty bare and on axel stands.

I remember the engine being removed, some body work being replaced but for what ever reason the restoration came to a halt and the car sat in its sorry state until around July '94.

Leading up to that July my dad had been offered a job in Dubai and had gone ahead to set up ready for my mum, 2 sisters and myself to emigrate. It was during this period that my mum packed up everything and the car was sold as a project and that was the last I saw of it.

It would be great to know if the guy who bought it got it back to its former glory or if anyone knows anything about the car, it would be good to hear from you.

Thanks in advance

Ollie

Thanks pontoneer, nice to know it's still on the road. :)

Seems it's 3 years older than what my dad thought

It is worth contacting the DVLA if you are seriously interested in finding the car and speaking with the current owner. They may be willing to pass your details onto the owner. If I were the owner I would want to talk to you knowing that you have some history for the car.

Good luck. A lovely story and a lovely car.

How lovely! Why not try a letter to the MB Club Gazette as well.

Shame the colour's been changed though!

There's a section on the forum over there for members trying to find out about previously owned cars , but only a fraction of members use the online forum and the readership of the Gazette goes out to all 10,000 or so members .

Derek, give the MRC for the 113 a PM and point him at this. He may be able to help. I think it may be Naj. I can't do it from here or I would.

Thanks for all the advice it's greatly appreciated. I would love to be able to find it and maybe even see it with my mum.

She doesn't know an Audi from an Austin but she had a lot of love for the SL and I know it would put a huge smile on her face to see it. I spoke with my mum today and gave her an update on this post.

She did mention that when the chap took it away he said he would let her know how he got in with it, sadly he never did but then again this was over 20 years ago so but more involved than a few clicks of a button.

Hi there Ollie,
I hope you're still reading this thread, I've just found it, But, I'm the guy that had the SL way back in 1993!
In a nutshell, I spent 3 years totally rebuilding the car, completed in the Summer of '96 when it won "Best in Show" at the Mercedes-Benz Club National event. At that time, it probably was the best 280SL in the UK.
I kept it for a further 5 years, lack of use, and major house refurbishment, prompting me to sell.
I kept tabs on the car for some time after, through T.M. Motors of West Molesey Surrey who might still know of the car.
Let me know if you pick this up, and, in the meantime I shall make some enquiries.

Malcolm

Well the DVLA are unlikely to give you details of who owns that car,a better bet is to contact the MOT station, the car does no mileage every year and has it;s MOT at the same garage in Richmond London, you do mot live very far away so a personal visit explaining the reason for the request may well produce results ,best of luck.
