Dog chewed the central console!

For no reason and for the first time ever, the 12 year old dog this evening decided to try get into the phone compartment on the central console (2005 facelift W203). He has chewed the leather(?) arm rest down to the plastic base and left a couple of tooth marks in the side covering of the console.

Anybody guess the likely cost to fix? Am I faced with buying a whole new console or do you think a body shop can re-cover it? If I need a new console is this something MB is likely to have in stock in the UK?

Thanks for any advice.

Ian

PS - I don't think the dog will be allowed to see his 13th birthday!

A breakers might be the place to shop, but failing that you can buy the lid seperately to the console.

There was probably the scent of food on the cover or inside the armrest.

Might be the best place for the dog too..... :D

How severe is the damage because there are some compaies that can repair but there would be a limit to the damage maybe a pic to this if possible

Gotta be a breakers or main dealer. Unless it looks perfect you'll never be happy. Trade the dog in for a puddy cat or wrap miles of masking tape around its mouth AND nose! I gaurantee this short sharp shock treatment will make sure your pooch will never do that again:devil: Perhaps the phone was ringing, or perhaps the dog wanted to phone a friend?

Good luck with the repair and stop feeding your dog interior parts of a car, it's not good for there long term health.

John

Edit
If you have it, would pet insurance pay for the damage? If you don't have it, then I gaurantee it won't

Advice already given for the arm-rest. As for poochy boy - is his health OK in otherways? He could be unwell as behaviour out of character is often a sign something is wrong - especially if they are getting on in years. Just something to look out for ;)

It wanted to use the "dog and bone" :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

I'll get my coat.....

I agree with Pammy,
Bearing in mind the dog's age, perhaps the poor thing has a tooth ache or is trying to dislodge a loose tooth.

You can buy a new armrest, and use a hot air gun (carefully) to get the tooth marks out of the side.

It's amazing what can be repaired on a Mercedes console by simply heating it up a bit...

Thanks for advice

Many thanks for all the comments - many have cheered me up! Attached is a photo of the damage. Sorry the quality is not too good but the toothmarks on the console can be seen in the centre bottom of the photo. It is not clear from the photo but a couple of the toothmarks on the console side have torn the material rather than made just a small puncture. I suspect I will need a new console and lid but any other suggestions most welcome. How much do you think a dealer will charge to replace the damaged material?

The dog is in fine health. I think he must have smelt the remains of my lunch which had rested on the lid earlier. So much for my attempt at economy - I suspect a three michelin star lunch would have worked out considerably cheaper!

Thanks again.

If it is covered by warranty
---------------------------
"that is quite normal, all of the armrests do that "

If it is not covered
--------------------
"It will take 4 weeks to get the dozen or so parts in and it is quite a large job which requires dismantling of the engine and the car to be bolted on a chassis dolly and turned upside down"
