Don't run your CLK55/E55 without air filters!

Why would you leave them in for 55k miles in the first place, in an engine like that ide change them or at minimum clean them at least every 20k.

Just my 02

1. I got the car with 54k on it
2. The change interval, as specified by MB, is 50k

Blow them out from the back with compressed air every year.
Us mere mortals with non-AMG tackle can probably afford the £7
for a filter every 2 years.

I own quite a few cheap tools. I know they're not top quality and certainly wouldn't last very long if I was using them in a professional capacity. However, my cheap tools are used very seldomly and, therefore, are likely to last me quite a while.
I take onboard all your very valid points but feel your looking too closely at my points. I am willing to put my life savings on the fact that your 'cheap' spanners are not the cheapest set out there!! I am using 'spanners' as an example simply because you have mentioned them, but the cheapest flimsy spanners are not only a waste of money, they can cause injury!! I totally agree that it would be silly for the likes of you and I to buy expensive tools. Totally 100% agree, but please accept that it would simply be a waste of money buying the cheapest! That has been my point all along. The cheapest spare part for a car will sometimes very quickly bite yer back pocket! :D

I think it was last year when there was a big fuss about cheap disc pads being sold at car boot sales! Useless, dangerous items that some folks were buying!!

IT SEEMS YOU MAY BE WRONG !!!!!!!!!

Is your car a W208 CLK 55 ??????

Is the part number for your filters 104 094 0104 ???????

If so, the cost at a Mercedes dealer is £18.29p + VAT = £21.49 before discount.

As a regular customer I would normally get 15% off ie. effectively saving on the VAT.
So, I would have paid £18.27p for each filter.

So, what is the problem with main dealers ???????????????????????

Please let me know if my assumptions have been wrong for your car.

Regards

Oh yea, they were made out of compressed cardboard, if memory serves me right!

Regarding the spanners, I actually do own a roll of 'car boot' quality spanners but only use them for light duty work as they're total crap (obviously) and are very 'springy', causing really tight nuts to round-off and making it rather hazardous to hit the end of the spanner with a hammer due to the pain it causes in the hand holding the spanner and the distinct possiblity the spanner will literally bounce off the nut and fly away! My 'good' set of spanners were still pretty cheap (maybe £40 for the set), but are more than good enough for DIY use.

I think we're generally on the same wavelength John!

Cheers

I don't know the part number, but I called Sytner Mercedes of Northampton and was quoted £48 per filter.

My problem with main dealers is that, for the most part, their charges are a rip-off. However, I do concede that in SOME cases, parts prices are comparable (and sometimes cheaper) than pattern parts. As I've already stated, I got Mann filters which are OEM, so I wasn't compromising on quality. Labour rates are a rip-off. Period.

Normally, I do check with the dealer on parts prices before going to a factor. However, in this case, I didn't bother because 1) I knew the probability was that the dealer would be more expensive and 2) The factor's was far more convenient for me to get to than the dealership.

If I was mis-informed by Sytner's regarding the price on the filter and the price you quoted is, in fact, correct, I will certainly check the dealership for parts prices in the future.

Cheers,
Ian.
