I'm having trouble getting my pics small enough to upload to the site.
Please can anyone advise the best format (jpeg, gif etc.) to use and how to reduce the size for uploading. I've tried three different formats but each time my files seem to be a factor of 1000 out.

the simplest method is using MS paint...

open picture using this, and under IMAGE is 'stretch / skew'

adjust size using the boxes - from 100% to say 50% in both boxes.

save.

JPEG / JPG is good, gif is ok.

If you have a more sopisticated program (paintshop pro / photoshop etc) there will be an 'image size' option under edit / image / adjust etc... use as above. Also under the save as... button will be 'advanced' - jpeg has the 'quality' option - set to 2/3rds of the way up the scale.. check its still good by opening the original picture. and comparing to the newly saved version..

In my case I use Paint Shop Pro to 'downsize' my pictures and I always save them in JPEG format.

If it's an image for the gallery I've just uploaded from my camera I open the image in Paint Shop Pro and select 'Save As'. After I rename the image I then select a compression factor of 40% in the 'Options' field to compress it to a size favoured by the forum before finally saving it.

For my Avatar I opened my image in Paint Shop, selected 'Image/Resize' from the top toolbar and entered a new size of 100 pixels by 100 pixels.

Any other paint program should give you the same options to compress your pictures and I found a wee bit trial & error was required at first to find acceptable compression ratios & sizes.

I use photoshop, Image resize down to 15x10cm seems to work fine.

Save in jpeg format.
