I was advised a little while back that the headgasket will need changing and after checking recently I think the time has come.

I am tempted to do it myself as I really couldn't afford to let a garage do the work however I'm not that confident and don't want to take the plunge and the get stuck in the middle of it.

Has anyone done this themselves before that is not too far away that would be willing to either do it for me and I would be happy to pay or even attempt the job together hoping that the result will be good?

I'm holding on to cash as if it were gold at the moment as we're expecting our first little fella in the next few months! :)

Even if someone can point me in the direction of somewhere that might do it a little cheaper would be good.

Thanks,

Leave it to the pros!

Not a job to attempt unless you have some experience IMHO. problems include removal of the dreaded timing chain guide pin in head, breaking exhaust manifold bolts etc etc. You need to check the head for distortion on an engineering flat edge. If its warped you will need to strip it and get it skimmed by a machine shop. Cylinder head bolts can stretch on some models and should be replaced on rebuild. Sometimes the job is easy but usually there is a least one snag. Best to leave it to a shop experienced in engine rebuilds and they should offer a warranty. They should be cheaper than MB. If the heads not trued up the gasket will blow again in a very short time. In the end its your choice.
