Golf TDi 170 commuter daily hack.
If you had the time, money, space, skill, what would be your chosen (or dream) engine/chassis project car build?

E30 + M113 5.4
Or
MX5 Mk1 + supercharged Hayabusa

MX5 is too heavy for the Busa solution to work properly (been there, tried that). 13b turbo is fun, if exceptionally thirsty.

E30 might as well get an M5 motor, otherwise it's just spelling different differently for the sake of being different.

On that thinking may as well buy an M5. Not really the point of the thread!

Maserati Biturbo engine in a Saab 900. For sheer silliness.
1834cc Beetle in a Brugger MB-2. For me.(Oops! not a car.)
Citroen HDI in a Landcrab. To modernise a clever and space efficient design.
PSA 2.7 V6 HDI in a Citroen CX. Smoothness, refinement, economy and unimaginable comfort.
Continental GT blower kit on a Phaeton. For thuggery.
P4 Rover JET1 replica.

Usually though the engines are better than the cars that they go into.
Most Fiats for example.
The Lexus LS400 is thirsty but with its gear driven camshafts and inability to wear out, there must be something that deserves it.
One of the best had to be the Gardner engined MkVII Jag.
The trouble is that I can buy something very powerful, fast comfy and well screwed together for the cost of a handful of bolts for a small aircraft so I have grown out of bothering.
What I would REALLY like is a 100 HP four stroke engine that could operate at 80% of its rated power for 2,000 hours, weighing less than 60Kg and costing less than ten Grand.

Not really. Using the M113 motor seems unnecessarily difficult for little gain, the E34 3.8 has nearly as much go and is an easy drop in (and makes for a very different animal). However, what I was really aiming at was the twin turbo v8 from the F10 model.

The 4.0 V8 CDI in a W211 in RHD form, plus the option of 4Matic.

The 4.2 V8 out of the RS4 squeezed into a MK1 Golf GTi.

The 339bhp 4.4 SDV8 out of a Range Rover and into a Defender.

Any AMG having a proper manual gearbox fitted!

An M117 in a W124 estate.

A turbocharged OM606 in a RHD W124 estate with a 5 speed auto.

Mercedes Maybach S600 with a twin turbo Gallardo V10 with about 1500hp
If I was to do something, it would be an A45 with a supercharged M156

Toyota MR2 MK3 roadster with an Audi S8 V8 hanging in midships, remapped to 400BHP.. and then maybe some form of forced induction later - all in a circa 996 KG car

Not really a dream as I have kinda bought it, 3 months of work to finish it, just hoping lift off over-steer is controllable.

Nice work!
I'd be more worried about power oversteer!!

I've been mulling over a project, a modest & minor one as projects go compared to what some people get involved in. I'd like to do a real lightweight (sans c.200Kg) W124 saloon, L/H/D with a M104 3.0 24V (balanced & ported) running on EFI with T/B's mated to a six manual, retaining stock looks.

Other than the above and pushing the boat out it would have to be a Ponton shell with the complete floorpan/suspension etc from a W201 with either a M102 2.5-16 or an M103/M104.

I'm not a fan for mixing like above, wouldn't put a BMW engine into a Merc either. I think also, if going down the 80's BMW route I go E34 before an E30, having owned both, the 5 Series is a far better car overall (if heavier). But hell, that's just me, it's good we're all different.

Brave man! :D On a more serious note will it be really driveable? I ask as there is/was a guy who specialises in MR2's (Camry 3.0 transplants being one of his popular requests) and he did V8 Audi transplant and he reported driveability issues...

Anyway, sounds totally mad :thumb:

You've just proved you're madder than me, I feel a whole better now thanks ;):D

The Gardner & Lexus engine projects 10/10. :thumb:

How close would a Suzuki MA15 come to your required spec, I'd imagine weight is your big issue?

V8 E30's are big fun no matter which lump is in there.;)

I wouldn't be interested in that, I don't like the red. :p

I've always fancied a Reliant Kitten with a fruity engine of some kind shoehorned in.
