dream project

I've been mulling over a project, a modest & minor one as projects go compared to what some people get involved in. I'd like to do a real lightweight (sans c.200Kg) W124 saloon, L/H/D with a M104 3.0 24V (balanced & ported) running on EFI with T/B's mated to a six manual, retaining stock looks.

So when are you starting?

Well, that's really a good question that I can't answer at this time. The excuses go like this. :D

The plan was hatched by myself, I'm good at making plans  and then I mentioned it to a pal that I'd like a left hooker and he suggested we go 50/50 as he also wanted a car for trips to France and me Germany. I was tasked with finding the right car and failed (didn't try too hard being candid), work and other things got in the way and I bought another car unexpectedly. My pal in the meantime bought a boat , got a great deal on it - never knew such a thing existed with a boat and he's not proving me wrong either by all accounts. So, the left hooker W124 is now on the back burner for this year. Hopefully, it will happen. Even if I just commit to buying an engine or g/box that might be the catalyst and I know where both are for sale too.

Im already building a toyota hilux with the lexus v8 engine

also got another lexus v8 here but unsure what its gonna get used for yet

V8 E30's are big fun no matter which lump is in there.;)
Was also thinking e36. Mainly due to availability and that e30 prices seem to be on the up for a solid one at least.
I have a 4.3 m113 in the garage as a starting point.
350z 6 speed manual box I reckon..

Make life easy, use the 6 speed from the m112. E36's are just as good as an e30, infact the newer rear suspension setup makes them a more predictable car.

Have you seen Retro cars magazine this month? Got a 190e running the 1uzfe and a supra 6 speed.

thats a dream swap, I had a few cars in mind for the conversion

w124 coupe, opel manta, e30 touring, transit van, audi 80 coupe, celica ra25

What I would REALLY like is a 100 HP four stroke engine that could operate at 80% of its rated power for 2,000 hours, weighing less than 60Kg and costing less than ten Grand.

What is the intended application? A 125hp bike engine will sit at 80% of its maximum rpm and deliver 100hp all day long - and then some. An R1 engine (complete with transmission weighs circa 65kg).

Strangely, what I have in mind goes in the opposite direction to everyone else's plans. Everyone wants to transplant a more modern and complicated engine/drivetrain into an older shell. I want to transplant an older (and very very simple) drivetrain into a newish shell.
That way the complex electronics I do get (ABS, ESP) mean I can drive the wheels off it without fear of death and if they fail it doesn't strand me. And I'm freed of the absurd complexities (electronic and mechanical) of a modern day drivetrain (which all too easily immobilise a car).

I'm sure a bike engine was considered and if so, possibly ruled out maybe due to lack of torque?

I've got the urge to drop an tuned m275 into either a 88 v8 vantage x pack, or a Jensen interceptor 2. Always liked the shape of those.

Toyota MR2 MK3 roadster with an Audi S8 V8 hanging in midships, remapped to 400BHP.. and then maybe some form of forced induction later - all in a circa 996 KG car

Not really a dream as I have kinda bought it, 3 months of work to finish it, just hoping lift off over-steer is controllable.

:D

Ooh that must be the one I spotted on eBay recently. Please post more about it!

I have a question.
If a car is presented for IVA testing and has had any structural modifications applied to the chassis (read bodyshell/monocoque) then the original registration number of that chassis will be denied and a Q-plate issued.
So, how come structural chassis modifications are permitted outwith IVA? I thought that for MOT purposes only chassis repairs were permissible. Or is that wrong?
Do these people rely on the MOT tester merely not noticing? And if so, how does an MOT tester not notice that the entire boot floor (and more) has been removed when they test a bike engined fortwo when the engine is half under the floor, half in the car?
Enlighten me please!

It would be nice to think that an R1 would last for 2000 hours at 80% power but it probably won't. In an R1, that would translate to about 250,000 miles. You would also need to add in around 15 Kg for the redrive necessary to get the speed down to about 2,500 RPM to drive a propeller.
As for old tech, I love the stuff. The 1700cc Turbodiesel from PSA is durable, simple and damn' near unbreakable (The old 90BHP 2.5 turbodiesel used in the CX is unbreakable and nobody has ever worn one out but it is very heavy, compared to, say, Stonehenge.
It did however waft me from Amsterdam to Brittany one night at 48 MPG.)
