Heated seat has stopped working on the drivers side. The switch on the door works and 3 lights illuminate (heat control). However, after about 5 seconds all 3 lights go out and the seat isn't warm. Anyone know of similar issues and what the cause was?
Passenger side works as normal.
Thank you.

Not solved. Apologise if I've accidentally suggested its sorted. Still unsure of the problem.

Well the fact that the heater seat button lights up should mean that the fuses should be ok,if you have not had a small being junping up and down on your drivers seat this might rule out the heating element,my first action would be to check the wiring under the seat,if all the wiring seems to be in place, then if you are not capable of checking the wiring I would get a auto electrician round to check if you have a open curcuit on the heating matrix in the seat, best to get that info before deciding what you want to do.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check the wires and see if there is anything obvious. If not then it looks like I'll have to spend a bit. Thank you!

I have exactly the same problem. Dealer is looking for 3 wks now

I have spoken with a specialist repairer and they seem to think its the element inside the seat shorting out after activating. There is 2 apparently and without investigation they say you can't diagnose whether its the base or back element thats at fault. Either way it seems it may cost a few quick to get it working.

Well we had a how to posted some time ago about fittting heating elements bought on ebay to a mercedes seat, maybe somebody can drag that up and post it,the cost if you decide to get a garage to do this will be high as it is a seat out job and time consuming, even thought the elements are quiet cheap.

I have retrofitted those before. The heat isn't quite as good but it works ok.

Did you ever get this fixed? If so, what was it?

I'm having the exact problem this week with the same car as you and the same problem!

I've done full electrical diagnosis on Insignia heated seats a year ago. I'm assuming it's the same basic problems.

Using a code scanner should reveal some codes, but basically it's likely to be a broken wire in one of the seat mats. This might be able to be tested in the car if you can locate the plugs for each mat. The test is simply continuity for each mat, and my guess would be that you will find no continuity on one mat.

The worst case diagnosis situation is likely to be taking the seat out of the car to strip it down to test it. If you are doing this, the Labour of removing the seat becomes a consideration.

If I were DIYing this (I have the right tools, including hog ring pliers and hog rings) having first checked fault codes and if none the wiser, then I would order the back and base mats. Remove the seat. Partiality de-upholster so i can test heating mat continuity. Then fully de-upholster either the back or the base and fit the the correct mat. Reupholster. Take the unused mat back to Merc for a refund.
It's more involved than that, as you need to consider isolating electrics, protecting your interior whilst wrestling the seat and frame out, and removing the possibility of seat belt/air bag explosions.

If you are not DIYing, then I'd try a seat upholstery specialist rather than Merc, who will probably sub it out anyway. But it might save time to deliver the car to them with both heated seat mats so they can use the correct one. If they can't do any basic electrical testing, then that causes an issue. I did this DIY as a total novice, so it doesn't take the brain of Britain to do it.

Likely a broken wire in a heat pad buddy. Gives this exact symptom with the 'on' then 'off'. It's usually the few second the system takes to assess whether the mats in the switched on seat are all working or not. When it dkscovers not after a few seconds, it switches itself off. It's not that the mats are providing heat for a few seconds.

I've covered all your options in my post above, and as other have mentioned, you could try to go down non-Merc heated pads, but then there could be additional electrical issues to resolve.

Do you have a specific question that you're unsure about?
