Help please. My Drivers side wing mirror doesn't always open when I get in the car. Usually if I lock and unlock the car that does the trick (was waiting for the weather to improve). This morning it won't open at all, temp was a balmy 5 degrees so its not frozen closed.

I can't hear any whirring or clicking from the mirror, so maybe its a loose connection? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Also, is it possible to pull the mirror back manually? I tried gently but it all seemed very solid to me so didn't want to risk breaking anything.

Sorry Pete cannot really help but it sounds like a bust wire. I too would fight shy of forcing it open.

If you are around Kirkham way today I'm sure Ian will pop it on his STAR for you and see what gives.

I cannot for the life of me remember how close the mirrors fold into the body. Any chance you could get one of the small rear-view mirrors which clamp onto the mirror casing from Hellfrauds to help you out whilst you get it sorted.

I know this is not completely related to the problem, but I always stop my mirrors from auto open/closing in winter, to prevent the possibility of damage by trying to open when iced up.

They are fragile enough without having to contend with that!

Thanks John, can't get over to Kirkham until Thrusday, finish work tomorrow so that is my back up plan at the moment.

Corned, is the auto open/close something that can be set in the car or do you disconnect a wire or fuse?

Looking around on the net the only thing I can find is to get some PTFE spray and put it inbetween the mating surfaces.

I'm sure TJ has the diagnosis right. Broken wires are a very common problem.

The auto open/close is a convenience function in the cluster settings menu. Have a read through your manual as different models (and which options are fitted) have a different menu structure.

They are not that hard to get off so you can get them into the light...

Mercedes - let's give people folding hinges, but not make the loom foldable... Cheers for that!

I have found if the battery voltage is low (11 volts) my drivers mirror will not move. but once in the car, with the engine running just press the wing mirror "in" button twice winds both back in then out again no problem. Hope that helps
