After driving recently in the snow and icy conditions.

I was considering the best way to drive our rear wheel cars with ESP etc up a very slippery gradient with the wheels slipping and the ESP flashing and the car slowing to a halt??

Well although in the past I would have said-Don't switch off ESP-I now give you another theory which worked very well under the above conditions yesterday.

Drive with normal ESP activated, when the car is slipping like mad, ESP flashing and the car slowing to a halt, then "turn off ESP" to gain grip where possible and the car will pick up speed. Then future slipping will reconnect the ESP anyway and you have control again till the next time.

Worked a treat for me anyway.

Isn't that the percieved wisdom anyway? The problem isn't the slippage but that the power gets cut so the car stops.
Turn it off and power is resored so movement takes place.

When we bought our C180 we were advised to use the "W" button if the roads were covered in snow ie winter setting.

At the same time the Hand Over bloke also said that if we were using the W setting then we should turn off the ESP as it works against the "W."

He said it would drive better in that instance.

Thats my 2p worth!

regards,

KJ

Maybe so but under my test the car didn't stop. The advantage of that is that it would be, and was, easier to keep going. As stopping could have been the final goodbye to traction as we know it.;)

Yes it was in C or W drive.

I've had it in W for the last few days.

When I got good and proper stuck I tried with the ESP on and off, but to no avail.

Roads are much more better now fortunately, but my car is now on my parents drive as it was easier to take it there last night, but their road is steep and still covered in snow and ice. Looks like it's going to have a weekend away!!

When it's icy or slippery I adapt my driving style making the right foot lighter and very steady and like a feather on the brake pedal;) I put W on and ESP off when I am on a dodgy surface, ie losing traction on a road, hill etc. Works for me;)

id go backwards up the hill.

But , to be perfectly honest , its gonna take a lot to stop me with my 17" wheels with winter tyres :)

plus we havnt seen a single drop of snow this year touch wood.

Still no snow up your way  Meg's 'll be OK on Arran then  Think they were looking forward to getting snowed in - lol - although it can have it's own wee climate anyway ;)

Nope , nothing. Those news pictures from down south just looked like a heavy frost anyways :D
