Does anyone know if any emissions stickers are required for Spain and Portugal and how to get them if they are?

As of 1st Jan 2023 they're required in Spain for cars registered there, but not for foreign registered cars. See here:

For Portugal it seems more complex in that "In Portugal, low emission zones are defined by each municipality. In order to find out which areas are restricted to certain vehicles, or to find out how to obtain authorisation to drive in such areas, you should consult the municipal authorities’ websites." See here:

If you find out anymore about the situation in Portugal, please let us know.

Yes you need to go to the local post office in Spain or Portugal (Not sure about Portugal to be fair) with you log book, NIE number and a form of ID, passport or driving license.

They are 5 euros, don't buy them on line they charge 35 euros !!

As far as I know in Spain the checks will start to happen as of next year but I bought one for our car just in case. Most of the checks will be in the larger cities an the guardia will happy releive you of 100 euros if you dont have it displayed.

Is your car registered in Spain?

I ask because according to the link I posted above "In Spain, emissions badges aren't awarded to vehicles registered abroad, because they aren’t needed." and on the DGT website, the answer to the question "If my vehicle has a foreign license plate, can I obtain a Spanish environmental label?" is a firm No.

I have a car in Spain yes, registered in Spain and hasn't left Spain. So it needs a sticker to be compliant, My S204 stays in the UK :)

If your traveling from the UK to Spain on UK plates I am pretty sure you dont need a sticker if its only "visiting"

Thanks I had looked at both of those sites. The Portugal site mentions both Lisbon and Porto. Porto will be on our trip so clicked the link for that city but unfortunately it goes into Portuguese and I can't find a way to translate it to find out exactly what to do.

One further thing re Spain if you have an emissions sticker from France or Germany they will accept that which I have both of, so Spain will be fine as a foreign visiting car with other emission stickers that I already have. Just Porto to sort out.

Any use?

Yes thanks, looks like there are 3 places Porto, Chaves and Guimaraes that may affect my route but it seems that the only vehicles allowed in these zones are residents, deliveries, construction and services. Presumably there will be park and ride available if I need it.

I was in Porto and Guimaraes last Autumn.

These are crowded, historic centres

My impression was that the ZAC in Porto was only in the inner core which wasn't worth entering anyway: parking is a nightmare.

Porto has an excellent idiot proof tram network with tickets available from machines at all the stops

Guimaraes is so small and crowded you can easily walk everywhere a tourist would want to go. You certainly can't park easily in the centre.

That was my impression as a visitor. A local resident may be along in a moment.

I wanted to but couldn't see how to
Just copy (highlight and right click) and paste the text that seems relevant.

You shouldn't need to retype anything
