Is your car registered in Spain? As far as I know in Spain the checks will start to happen as of next year but I bought one for our car just in case.
Thanks I had looked at both of those sites. The Portugal site mentions both Lisbon and Porto. Porto will be on our trip so clicked the link for that city but unfortunately it goes into Portuguese and I can't find a way to translate it to find out exactly what to do.As of 1st Jan 2023 they're required in Spain for cars registered there, but not for foreign registered cars. See here:
Traffic: Emissions badges - Traffic rules - Vehicles - Citizens - Your rights and obligations in the EU - Tu espacio europeo - Punto de Acceso General
Information about emissions badges, how you can check a vehicle’s badge and what each badge means.administracion.gob.es
For Portugal it seems more complex in that "In Portugal, low emission zones are defined by each municipality. In order to find out which areas are restricted to certain vehicles, or to find out how to obtain authorisation to drive in such areas, you should consult the municipal authorities’ websites." See here:
Traffic rules and mobility in Portugal - ePortugal.gov.pt
ePortugal, the central portal for Public Administration services.eportugal.gov.pt
If you find out anymore about the situation in Portugal, please let us know.
One further thing re Spain if you have an emissions sticker from France or Germany they will accept that which I have both of, so Spain will be fine as a foreign visiting car with other emission stickers that I already have. Just Porto to sort out.As of 1st Jan 2023 they're required in Spain for cars registered there, but not for foreign registered cars. See here:

Try google translate?Porto will be on our trip so clicked the link for that city but unfortunately it goes into Portuguese
I wanted to but couldn't see how toTry google translate?
Yes thanks, looks like there are 3 places Porto, Chaves and Guimaraes that may affect my route but it seems that the only vehicles allowed in these zones are residents, deliveries, construction and services. Presumably there will be park and ride available if I need it.
Porto - Limited Traffic Zone
Porto has an access regulation in place that is also called Zonas de Acesso Automóvel Condicionado (ZOC) or Zonas de acesso condicionado (ZAC).urbanaccessregulations.eu
Any use?
