Yesterday I drove back from London after a long walk, I noticed the droning noise again after I put my vario roof back on because it was raining. Is the rear wheel bearing or final differential transmission trying to tell me something? I retracted it back as the rain stopped and the droning noise gone. Previous thread I put out someone suggested it the idle wheel. Being hard of hearing I am not sure whether it came from the front wheel or rear. It more likely the rear as the slk seat it nearer the rear wheels than the front. The last time I packed grease on the wheel bearings was in 1983 on my Escort. Instead of fixing it, it got worse, screwing in the nut against a new wheel bearing on a particular torque. Too loose it will be noisy and too tight, will cause the wheel bearing to heat up.

Undoing the final differential transmission oil filler cap is a nightmare under the car.

Wheel bearing set up a humming sound from about 20mph and upwards. with someone else in the car that would help to pin point it, and slip the car into N when going down hill, this helps to find what corner it is on.

By jacking the car the fronts are easy to feel by just turning the wheel and feeling the rollers, they should turn silky smooth, if you can feel the rollers than thats the one.

Its harder to detect in the rear as the drive chain is engaged the whole time, though its mostly the fronts
