Does it crank? Do any electrics come on when these non-starting episodes occur?

It trys to start, just will not fire, all lights come in the correct places as i say sometimes it will start 1 st time, this happens hot or cold.

I know what you mean.... :-(

I have had a very similar problem on my petrol C200. The engine would try to start but not hold. The interior alarm lights would flash. In the end I would have to reset the alarm. I used to think that it was a problem with the alarm, but now I think it is indicitave of a fault with the engine. On mine, I checked the air filter, trunking, plugs and leads and then used some injector cleaner placed in the fuel tank. Since then, I only have an occasional starting problem.

Hope this helps....

By bizarre coincidence, my 98 W210 developed this problem recently. It refused to start spontaneously having just stopped off and got back in. Had to be towed and then a few hours later it started without any problem. Mine would turn over for a few seconds but not "catch" and start up.

Then it just stopped outright last week, and the problem did NOT show up on the diagnostics when I got it seen to. It was an electrical relay to the fuel pump which cost €48 but they charged me and arm and leg because it took them 3 hours to find the problem (because no ODBII info or anything to go with).

So it could be faulty battery charge, faulty relay to fuel pump, faulty immobiliser. I would get it looked at sharpish as I was caught pretty much stranded in a place where you wouldn't normally want to find yourself!!!

Thanks for the fast response, i see im not the only one i will get it checked out.

Your car has MB DAS II immobiliser system (the one with red & green lights).
If you try to enter the car before the lights have stopped flashing the car won't start due to an anti hyjacking feature of the immobiliser.

Try ensuring the lights hav definately stopped before opening the door.

Alternatively go for the fuel pump relay or overvoltage relay.

Thanks i will watch for the lights before geting in.
