E Class Fuel Economy - Diesel v Petrol

2003 E320 Avantgarde, 245,000 miles on the clock,no rattles, no smoke. 46 mpg regularly on a 400 mile journey from Northampton to Fife. Confirmed by filling up with diesel after the journey. I have seen greater @ 49 mpg but the roadworks / accidents on the M6 pull it down a bit and of course winter time is not the best time of year for achieving max mpg.
It is hard to believe such mpg figures can be obtained from a 3.2 diesel engine and such a heavy car.

Steve
Is it stock or economy remap? How do you get 49? I get 45 but that’s includes town driving at both ends

Driven to make progress, who needs a stinky dirty hand at the diesel pump? S212 E250 petrol, one of the few.

Nearly 4000 miles since last reset, A/B road 30/60 commute and general driving occasional motorway runs at speed limit levels. 29.7 MPG. I saw 37 earlier this year on a run to Holland earlier this year.

Wow - you found one. I passengered in one once and really liked it. Very smooth and very quiet. Reminded me of the W124's with the 2.0 petrol albeit a lot more powerful.

The driver was from Singapore or Malaysia IIRC. He'd buy one new or nearly new then sell it on at 9 or 12 months to one of his family who'd ship it back to the motherland where RHD petrol Mercs command a premium.

When I was looking for my current 212 I was originally looking for a 350 but was open to a 250 - I just can't recall ever seeing one. Shame they never made a "300e" with that engine and the electric gubbins as that would have suited my needs very well.

2016 E350 Bluetec

Average 37 mpg using B Roads on a run 43 mpg in France on their autoroutes average 48 mpg.

Above taken from on board read outs.

Ah, that explains why the Malaysian guy who bought my W124 petrol 6-pot 260E looked so pleased with it. It was a great car and served me very well, especially when I was commuting daily between Cheltenham and Slough, eating up the 200 miles with ease.

This one is from last Summer trip to Falkenstone, France, Belgium and Germany which is reflected in an average speed

And 36.9mpg during my so far ownership

I’m over the Moon with both tbh.

I love seeing numbers like that! My E320 is a relative baby with 122k on the clock but good to know it could double that and soldier on.

You're right about the figures considering it's not a lightweight and the 3.2ltr engine is not exactly small, yet 45mpg+ is easily done, even in winter.

I took my partners CLS down to pick up my daughter this weekend. That's the newer 3.0 V6 diesel and I just can't get it to give me the same figures as my 320. The best I got on an average over 260 miles was 41mpg which is pretty respectable. I'm just surprised as it's a 7 speed so cruises at a lower RPM, not likely to be much weight difference yet just isn't as efficient on the motorway.

Let’s face it if you drive like Miss Marple you can get great mpg out of these big Mercs old or new.
I did about 320miles today with mixed driving in my E350CDi estate. My average was about 35. I’m really impressed as I absolutely thrashed it. I was on a tight schedule!!

I can’t speak for the newer models , but my current 300SL-24 gives around 400 miles to a tank , roughly 60L when I refuel , which works out to 30mpg , sometimes a bit more , sometimes a bit less .

My W124 estates ( 300TE and 300TE-24 , the 470,000 mile one ) were about the same , as was my 190E 2.6 , although when I towed the caravan with the estate cars the consumption sunk a fair bit .

My original 190E , with the 2L engine , surprised me by returning 45mpg ( yes forty five ) on a long run , averaged across 3 tanks , and loaded with car parts , including a door on the roof rack on the way back . Just fitting the 2.6 diff to my current 190 with the 2.3L engine so will see how that works out .

The big surprise was my 500SEL which wasn’t so very much worse , returning mid 20’s most of the time , but could drop below 20 if driven hard or around town . Still easier on the pocket than the older M110 280E/CE/TE/SE cars I had so many of , which would struggle to break 20mpg .

I don’t particularly choose my cars with fuel economy in mind , although my little Polo 6N with the 1.4L engine is returning 52mpg , but petrol cars can work out cheaper to run compared to diesel when you take account these days of tax and repair bills .

I won’t dwell on my money pit C270CDI , which cost me thousands in repair bills ( all 5 injectors , thermostat , swirl flaps , and other non engine related problems) , then I heard later that the new owner had a blown turbo . It ended up costing more to run than any of my petrol cars .

Most of our driving is long distance, in the UK we get around 50mpg if there's no traffic (mostly Motorways at around 70mph) Better in Europe, just returned from SE France, returned a respectable 52.3mpg over 1574 miles, with quite a bit of local town driving as well. Today showing 50.4mpg after a 549 mile run up to Scotland earlier in the week.

The killer for consumption is hills, being such a heavy car, going up (and down) soon eats the diesel, definitely why it's better in Europe (travelling from Calais East or South East is mostly flat). Not found a major difference between Comfort and Economy settings in terms of mpg, but I prefer the Economy setting when using Active Drive Assist, otherwise it tends to take off like a startled cat when it suddenly finds a clear road ahead.

Well the E certainly liked the warm weather. Trip to Bristol and back the other weekend, decent average speed and even doing the maths, this worked out at a genuine 49mpg!

Late 2011 e350 cdi s212 (265hp).

45mpg on a 25mile run to where I work on Fridays. Mainly motorway.

35 average.

Can't argue with that really.

Recently traded in my CLS 3.0d (218), put about 120,000 on it average around 37 mpg.

Just got a W213 E220d a couple of weeks ago so far averaging about 50-52 and today had a 260 trip and showing 61,4 on mixed roads through Scottish Highlands!
That said I haven't yet had a chance to work out how accurate the readout is.

W212 E220AMG Estate
Solo run from Anglesey to Stoke on Trent A55 - M56 - M6 the other day 52.3mpg average.
Local short drive day to day average 41mpg
Towing a 1500kg caravan average 28mpg to 34mpg depending if cross country or major motorways
Quite happy with these figures.

S211 320cdi
35mpg obc - 32mpg calculated

Diesels will always win on economy if driven with reasonable restraint.

The high torque values produced at relatively low engine speeds allied to high gear ratios tends to have them right on their peak torque curve (i.e. the most efficient part of the engine speed band) when cruising. Start driving a diesel enthusiastically and near to the red line and see consumption figures change very quickly for the worse.

I managed 55mpg on the dash once from my w211 e320. Cdi. Over 80 mile trip .

2011 E350CDi Coupe

Three Trip computers i have saved are as follows.

Run 1 (Bruges / back)
506 Miles @ 47.1 Mpg / Average Speed 51mph

Run 1 (M4)
115 Miles @ 40.4mpg / Average Speed 44mph

Run 2 (M4) After a Remap
109 Miles @ 44.8mpg / Average Speed 59 mph

Added the speed as i am not sure how they would affect but its there!

E250Cdi at steady 80 hovers at 47MPG (over winter) and recently back to 51MPG (on the summer mix of diesel).

At a steady 60 will see 62MPG.

We are talking over 180miles of motorway and A-road.

Suspect that I will end up in a CLS/E350 BlueTec with AdBlue and so anticiapte 20% inferior return.......makes a lot of difference over 25-30kmiles/annum, especially when my ML is lucky to see mid-20s.
