E Class Fuel Economy - Diesel v Petrol

E220d W213

I can easily get 60+ mpg on a long motorway run but it drops dramatically if I thrash her.
From Stranraer to Manchester on Saturday I averaged 65.1 mpg. I did a steady 70 on the M6 and a good job too as her majesty’s finest were sat in their usual spot on the bridge at Southwaite services looking for a few customers.

I have a 15 mile commute to work so I tried for a long time to see what was the best mpg I could possibly achieve. So air con off, no heated seats etc etc.
Best I could get was 70.6 mpg over the 15 miles and I did it two days running into Manchester. Admittedly they were very quiet early mornings.

I’ve deduced that the journey is slightly downhill overall and that going to work is always better mpg than returning to the hills, with the average 10-15 mpg worse on the return trip.

Oddly I can see no discernible difference between the comfort and eco modes.... though sport and rage modes make the fuel gauge drop like a hot rock.

W211 E320 cdi Brim to brim over 24,500 miles 37.46 MPG.
W211 E500 petrol " " " 2,350 " 24.36 MPG

Used to have an S320 cdi 2004 IL6 that did 47mog all day long on commute to work down A11 and back roads 75 miles best was 53 going to Strasburg.

Just bought a S212 250CDI AMG 2012 best car I have ever owned! Same commute etc 54 mpg.

Feel it will do better than that on a good long run. But just a fab and fast car

This was my latest trip... Mostly motorways doing, errrm, 70MPH the whole way.

I use Shell V Power.

a couple of years on....

Ive managed to get 59.4MPG out of my E320 cdi over 110 miles at night doing 62MPH....

Not bad for a car the same weight as a german tank...

probably helps at 55,000 miles and it has an oil change every 4000!!!

Long Live The OM648!

This is the current mpg figure from my W211 E320. This is pretty much 95% motorway driving though but shows what they can achieve.

In fact it still impresses me for a 3.2ltr engine! :)
Fantastic mileage shot , 122222 , love it

2014 E400, last 6,000 miles averaged 28.8 mpg, mainly A-road blasting with an occasional motorway run, quite pleased considering the pedal application...

My 314k mile 2011 E220 CDi has averaged just over 47mpg over this mileage, the best being 60.2.

Driving in London which I did on a regular basis would see it drop to low 30's but the 70 mile journey down and back always brought it back up to mid 40's, sometimes higher.

I can still regularly get 52/53 on longer drives and it never drops below 40 for my shorter trips into town which is a 15 miles ish round trip.

It also loves the warm/ hot weather to the tune of 3/4 mpg.

Haha yeah the mileage was a lucky one. I sold the car about 6 weeks ago with 142k on in the end. Hopefully the next owner will take it lots higher. :)
