E coupe V C coupe...

For various reasons I'm not going to continue with my CLS for much longer (will move it on when I get back from Russia in September) and have decided to go down the 2 door coupe route for the next car.

I've been reading a thread on the MBWorld US site today comparing the C and E coupes (which as we all know are on the same platform) and I was wondering what you guys thought about the differences..

Personally, I think I prefer the styling of the E.....

MERCEDES gave the E COUPE a considerable price hike when the C class coupe came in without really changing the spec so it could be argued it's now overpriced? If however you want a V8 petrol ??? [ AMG excepted ] Both cars look good on the road with the E shading it for "presence". However I find the C class interior "more of a piece" than the E class which feels slightly clumsy for some reason- think its that more vertical dash?? The E class does have the pillarless side opening windows + frameless glass compared to the conventional [ and some would say more reliable in winter!!] B pillar'd framed C class doors. Unless you specifically want a V8 I think I would go for Class coupe with a "bit of designo" paint and / or interior to individualise your "engine of choice" {= V6 petrol?? } car for what you might pay for an E class.

Not a bad choice to make Barry. Whats wrong with a lightly used E250cdi coupe?. C coupe has a nicer interior, but is less spacious.

Nice choice to make, but the C coupe isn't as a well resolved a design as the 3 series coupe and the C class wagon/saloon is the better styled car.

Interesting one.

I imagine, coming from the CLS the E will be a more normal transition. It seems to be more focused on elegance and style than the C which is more sporty and driver-orientated? At least to my eyes. That said, presumably you fancy a switch from a coupe-like 4 door because you fancy something more sporty, so maybe the C is the way to go?

I imagine there will be a wallet benefit too.

Just to add, in the E that I have been in it was clear that there was a bit more money spent here and there on the interior and I love the pillar less look like my old 209 had.

The C class interior is still good though, and very cosseting.

I tried both the C & E Coupe's back to back before making my selection.

As mentioned above, the C Coupe does without the pillarless doors (which I thought I'd miss when I got the car, but I'd truly forgotten about it completely until writing this post). They make a proper Coupe 'statement' for me and make every entrance & exit more of an event.

Little things like the non-digital heating controls in the C are a personal choice as to whether you like them or not, whilst engine choice, the majority of the spec list and colours etc seem to overlap both ranges significantly - unless you want a cabrio (E) or a V8 (C).

The main difference between the two cars for me were the size & image. The E is a much bigger car and has a great road pressence, especially in white, red or silver with a Panoramic or Canvas roof.

Perhaps its because the E does without an AMG 'halo' car, or maybe it's because the only people I've seen driving an E Coupe seem to be people 'of a certain age', but it doesn't have a very youthful image to me?

I'd say, both cars are excellent but have slightly different characters, so you'd best go and try them for yourself, then decide which suits your needs, personality and taste. The good thing is that you can't go wrong with either!

Driven the E500 coupe, its great but more of a sporting luxury car if you see what I mean.

I like the look of the cls saloon - I had one for a while and i enjoyed driving it - the only downside for me was getting in and out of it and the pointlessness of the rear doors and poor rear aspect. Expect the e class coupe does all the above much better (and it doesnt look bad either) - think you'll be happy with either choice but the e might have the edge.

Yup! A 2010 E250 is the likely route if it's an E.

I still love the shape of the CLS and the E coupe does remind me of it a lot (roof line, window shape etc).

Boss, BMW 6 is lovely, but way too much dosh! (we'll discuss this idea next week over sheesha!)

Saw a lovely E coupe today at a village fete near where I live (I kid you not, there was a classic car show as well and the E was in the car park along with 3 E saloons!) in thr same grey as my Saab and I thought it looked excellent. I do slightly agree with some of the guys on the US site who thought the C coupe looks a bit like a Honda Accord.... but I bet it drives well....

Hopefully I'll get to drive both when I get back from Russia and choose, but on style alone the E wins for me... so far....

You might as well get the car you want, I feel the E coupe will impress you a lot. And those seats are the best in the business. Brilliant and worth it alone. Bags of space, stylish, its a real grand tourer without being a bloated barge....

If the E is your bag, then I know you'll enjoy it. I drove the E350 CGi and it was real smooth.

The original question however is valid on a number of levels, as if you're up for a classy, 2 door GT with a premium badge, then a fair number of prospective buyers could find themselves selecting between two MB cars! There's clear daylight between a 3 Series Coupe & a 6. And there's similar daylight between a TT & A5/S5. Not so with MB's C & E coupes.

I would say from the CLS the E class coupe would seem 'more' car...

The C class seems a little small, not 'quite' as nice inside.

If its almost the same money then the E class.

CLS is longer and more premium platform, E coupe and C coupe is the 204 platform .. make sure you drive them before making the change

The big seller of the E is the drop top availability, not something Mr Sorrel should rule out if he gets rid of the Saab.
