Dear All,

I am thinking of changing my 1998 C180 sport estate for a 7 seater E-class. I was originally only considering diesel models for the torque and economy but have seen a couple of E200K's which are newer/lower mileage with a reasonable spec. How would these compare in regards to fuel economy? I would be buying an auto model whatever the engine.

My C180 does around 410-420 miles per tankful, around 31/33 mpg. I would expect a diesel E-class to do around 35/40 mpg. I have discounted the 240/280/320 petrols as being a bit thirsty at around 25 mpg.

I do 20,000 odd miles a year so fuel economy is important although i am aware that there are other factors such as purchase price, servicing costs and resale value which should be considered.;)

Coming from a C180K I tried an E200 estate before deciding on a diesel powered version. The 1.8 Komp engine works really well in the C Class, but is overwhelmed by the larger E Class estate. Because it has to be worked hard refinement suffers as a result. Try for yourself, but a lightly stressed, touquey oil burner works much better in the larger estate. the E220 is not to be dissmissed, but if you can run to 5 or 6cyl model, you will keep it longer.

If your going to use all the seats then for relaxed driving I would prefer a bigger engine, but there is nothing wrong with the 200K. If your expecting to average 35 - 40mpg for all round motoring I think that might be optimistic for the 320CDI. :o Motorway cruising with a 211 will just scrape into the 40mpg, but urban driving will quickly fetch it down. :o

John

Admittedly my E320CDI is a saloon not estate but over 36,500 miles it has averaged 38.5mpg. Best was half a tank at 42.7mpg. Worst was its first ever tankful at 32.16mpg.

I use the car very little for town work (that's where my wife's Focus comes in) so it's mainly a mix of A roads and motorways. I should add that I don't claim to be light footed but I do try and adjust my speed on throttle only and avoid using the brakes.
