hi all, a friend of mine is considering getting either of the above, he has about 8k to spend, are there any pros or cons of either car, the car will be used daily fo a 14 mile round trip to work and back every day and regular trips to poland, he would also prefer manual, was this option availiable on these cars:dk:

many thanks
chris

Yes, you can get manual 220 and 270cdi's.

I have a 220cdi auto and its fine for most situations, bit roudy though and not the most refined. It works hard to move an E class body. A manual gbox might be better as less power losses.

I'd aim for a 270cdi all being equal, not much worse on fuel, bit more refined and more powerful to make the car seem more effortless.

I'd back the 270. Previously had a 220CDi Estate and now got the 270 in W209 CLK (which is heavier than the C class Estate) I would imagine in the larger E class the extra grunt will be even more appreciated.

Neither will be particularly frugal on a 14 mile round trip to work. In the winter the 220 took more than 7 miles to get up to temp. I did read somewhere that the 270 warms up quicker. Maybe somebody can confirm whether or not this is correct and if so why.

...should have added you will get good mpg on trips to Poland...unless too much right boot is used, of course!

thanks guys, will pass on my findings
