Hi guys, have a 2001 E220 cdi (facelift), after starting the glow plug lights goes out as normal then comes back on for a min or so before going off again and staying off..

Car starts no probs , after viewing various forums and speaking to Merc the glow plug light staying on means i have a faulty glow plug..?

After speaking to an independent garage today he said CDI engines do not use the glowplugs unless really cold and he needs to plug in diagnostics as it may not neccesarily be a plug issue? am not sure what to do ...?

Another question is my windscreen bonnet jet seems to have become detached and is pumping out water, is this a normal fault, i will need to take off insulation to view...

Any advice, thanks

i dont know a lot about diesel engines but i do know that the glow plug light on the sprinters doubles as the engine managment light!
might be similer???
probly wrong

My glowplug light on our Sprinter will come and and remain on for a minute or so even if you restart the engine after a 100 mile trip.
IIRC it is a faulty sensor. The van starts perfectly even in the -18 temp we had here recently.

The washer jet becoming detached may well be due to the recent freezing weather and pressing the screen washers before the jet has thawed out sufficiently.

IMHO, definitely a glow plug failure. Accepted wisdom is to replace them all. Whoever does it needs to get the head (nb it's aluminium) as hot as practicable to facilite cracking the plugs on removal. Otherwise, as happened to me, one or more plugs may well snap in situ. This means the head has to come off, which will hurt your bank balance!!

MB do know about this but when it happened to me, they weren't broadcasting the problem!! Not sure they are to this day!!

I had the dreaded glow plug light problem on my W203 220cdi.

I took of the glow plug relay and exposed the connectors. I tested the resistance between each connector and earth. Plug number 4 (nearest the bulkhead) was open circuit. I bought a replacement and swapped it. I got the engine really hot and set the torque wrench to 20nm, and it came out without difficulty.

On replacement the light went out after a few minutes and has stayed off.

I don't advocate changing them all. I have changed the one that is hardest to reach, and will change others as required. The first one failed at 185K miles, the other 3 have now done 202K.
