Hi you knowledgable people, hopefully someone is able to help? 1st post so please be gentle!
Car has developed a fault the last few days when fully warm and today engine light came on. Basically will not go into 1st gear from park instead goes into neutral and after several attempts goes straight into 3rd and i am able to pull away slowly. Car has 108k on the clock and had transmission oil change on 74k. Will it need another oil change or could it be something else? Thanks for your time

Most likely to be the conductor plate, pretty common fault, have a look at these guys, for explanation and solution. IMG_3491.jpeg

You need someone with Star to read the fault codes 👍

I have just heard back from Mercedes Dartford and they say i have a defective transmission control unit and the cost of replacement will be including the initial investigation £2834. How does this sound and should i shop around to a local specialist?

Bit more detail required , are they talking about the module in the car or the unit inside the transmission (conductor plate) ? Or both. ?

Either way the quote is extortionate .

More research required ,in my opinion , could cut that quote in half.

You could try Olly , Black C55 on here .

He runs PCS in Horndean , and is a very knowledgeable and experienced M-B specialist . I know a bit of a distance from you , but not a million miles away , many members on here take their cars to him .

That reads as though M-B Dartford will be charging you something for just looking at your car , before you accept or decline their quotation ?

That means you'd be looking for a substantially lower price elsewhere , before it was worth your while not going with them ?

Sounds like the conductor plate as in post 2 give ECU testing a call, they were very helpful but mine was the 7 speed transmission.

Ok so i have brought the car home from mercedes, they charged me £252 for the diagnosis. They say the codes it is showing point towards transmission control unit and have quoted £2582. They will not give me the specific codes only a code which is a generic gearbox fault.
I have approached a couple of independent specialists who do lots of gearbox work for quotes.
TEC automotive in Northfleet have quoted £2400 based on control unit, this includes oil change which the mercedes one did not. TEC are saying that they will not offer warranty on this work without there own diagnosis this quote is simply based on mercedes claim of the fault.
I have approached JT Automatics in Erith who are a gearbox specialist and very local to me. They say they will not quote based on replacing control unit but will happily carry out a diagnosis and advise on the repair. They have said the fault code from mercedes is a general code and does not specify exactly whats wrong. I have booked in to see them next Friday. I will keep you posted, thanks all for looking.

I have checked their website and it doesnt list my car year or 9g box. I assume you have to supply them the faulty unit rather than taking the car to them?

Mercedes charged you for diagnostics.

You should own that report and the full copy of all of the codes!

Yes i agree they obviously want to keep it in house and keep the business

Ok, so i took my car to JT Automatics yesterday for a diagnosis and they reported the following codes:
P073E00 Reverse gear cannot be engaged.
P07B700 The signal of the pressure sensor is implausible.
They are recommending a rebuild which was my worst fears. They have quoted £3400 + VAT.
Just a reminder this is an E220D 2018 with the 9g box.
What are you guys thoughts and what do you recommend or do i have no choice but to go for the new gearbox? Thanks

So does that mean a full transmission rebuild?
And does that mean the TCU that MB diagnosed is actually OK?
