I have a 1998 e240 auto 126k on the clock, been having issues with erratic gear changes and loss of power, but not all the time. Usual symptoms is that box wont change until its over 4500rpm and then when it does putting on the gas seems to have little effect. On the flat it just holds at the same speed but going uphill it loses speed. Any ideas?

What is the MAS, and how costly will it be to remedy the fault.

I need the car for work so still need to keep driving it until I can find someone to deal with the fault.

Is this liable to cause any damage?

Not damage. The MAS (also known as MAF) senses the amount of injested air thus helps the ECU set the fueling. Less fuel = less torque so the gearbox holds a lower gear for longer.

Price approx £259 approx.

It's worth having a diagnostic run at this price in case this isn't the cause.
