E240 Throttle Cable

Can anybody help please! I have a 1999 E240 (petrol).
There is a throttle cable adjuster just inside the engine compartment (L/H side at the back)which consists of a plastic thread that adjusts either way through a collar.
Adjusting this slackens or tightens the bare part of the cable & has quite a dramatic effect on gear change timing & smoothness, kick down and therefore general quality of ride.
Is there a 'factory' setting for this, as general trial & error is hit & miss and almost impossible to get perfect.
I have been told by the local Mercedes dealer service dept that the cable is within 'acceptable tolerance'. ??
I believe the cable was adjusted without my permission or knowledge on a previous service when I lived in Herts. I have now moved to Devon.

Thanks Colin

Sensible man moving from hearts to Devon, I can look up the info you require later in the day, do remind me if I forget

Another solution if members don't mind is if you have an E240 around 1999, (Auto, petrol) would you mind checking your throttle cable adjuster in the engine compartment (Back L/H side) and advising how many turns of the thread are either side of the collar, and how much slack there is in the bare cable.
(e.g. currently mine has 3 front, 8 back & 3/8" slack)

Thanks Colin

e 240 throttle cable

Mine is a 1998 E240, threads showing at the front are 7, and the rear 5, that is the top of the the thread im looking at, it has almost no slack, or another measurement where the threads exits the front of the bracket to the very last thread is 26mm hope this helps.

Throttle Cable

Thanks for that but if I try to set it up with 7 to the front (ie nearest the bare cable) the bare cable goes very slack and gear change is lurchy.

There should be a very small amount of slack in the cable. 5mm from the centre line.

Between cars it does vary a lot so don't adjust it the same as another.

I tweaked mine by tensioning it until the revs rose, slackened off half a turn, then checked if when revving the engine it returned to idle. Worked a treat!

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, the adjustment appears to be individual to each car, and there does not appear to be a way to have it set up.
I will keep plugging away !

Colin I have looked at every thing listed, the are no fixed instructions, I have one paper only

Please PM with your Email address

Colin, I didn't have a chance to look at my old car on Bonfire Night as my g/f's dad came over in their other car!

Will hopefully get a chance to look this Saturday...

Malcolm very kindly supplied some set up instructions which I have used to make a further adjustment. This has left the bare part of the cable quite slack.
The result is a slightly smoother gear change but when running cold the engine feels like it is vibrating & gurgling.

I still have this problem, I asked the dealer on it's latest service last week if their was a 'factory setting' of some sort, but not to touch it unless the mechanic thought that there was definitely something wrong.
The reason being is that I have it running resonably well now and I didn't want any 'trial & error' testing that would make it worse.
The service guy ageed and said that if I wanted to 'invest' 2-3 hours labour charge at a later date he would see what they could come up with.
At the moment it changes gear a bit quick at slow speeds, and after reversing can race a bit when put back into drive.
I would have thought that the dealers would be able to put a laptop or some thing on it and adjust it electronically.
Maybe the cable needs replacing. Any more ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks Colin

Has the car got an electronic throttle? If so its possible the throttle module on the bulkhead is faulty or needs calibrated-[needs the correct MB hand tester to do this] or the the throttle actuator is faulty or sticking [ sometimes the throttle body butterfly "throat" needs a clean]. The pedal to actuator cable itself may be sticky-have you tried lubricating it. According to Haynes " with the linkage in idle position there should be 0.5 to 1.0 mm freeplay at the end of the inner cable. if necessary, turn the adjustment nut at the end of the outer cable to achieve the correct freeplay. [this refers to the 4 cylinder models with an electronic throttle but principle probably applicable to the V6 also?]
