I have a Question, Which Hopefully, someone will be able to Answer.

As some of you know, I have just started working as a Chauffeur in a 2004 E270 CDI done 180000 Miles, yes thats right 180000 Miles. I would imagine that most people would consider this car to be Worn, or at least, Well Worn, but that is not the case, with Full Tony Purslow Service History and recently had its D Service (By my Mercedes Mechanic) this car is in Absolutely Fantastic Condition (Ah, I now see that I can post Attachments, pics coming in a few minutes) The Onboard Computer says that over 85000+ Miles, it is returning 41.8 MPG, Can this reading be Incorrect, or can these systems not Fault??

Anyone else's experience with the same car would be Helpful, I will take the camera and take a coupole of pics to show,

Regards,

Terry.

Although I don't have quite the statistical backup you have, my mpg ranges from 30(in traffic) to 52(65 on the motorway) so 41.8 is entirely reasonable. This figure however is particularly sensitive to a)Right foot & b)Outside temperature(freezing conditions can make 10-15% difference).

Trip computer numbers tie in pretty accurately with calculations done when re-filling the tank.

42 mpg should allow some city driving, what has this car done so far?

The computer reading can be tuned with SDS. It might become a bit optimistic when nozzles wear but I guess nothing significant.

Looks like someone has had the odometer changed, added 100 000, or perhaps 150 000 miles.:D

The Car looks and drives like a 70000miler or so, It feels tight on all Joints, Engine is responsive, in fact, the only fault I can find is sometimes it takes about 10 minutes for the Multi Function steering wheel to Function? Has anyone else suffered from this Problem?

So 41.8Mpg is Believable?

Thanks,

Terry.

My C270CDi estate was on 44.6MPG since it was born, until the muppets who last serviced it reset the main trip meter.

I was hoping to replace the E270 with an E220CDI, it seems that may not be neccessary then, how much better will the smaller engine be on Diesel, not worth talking about, I imagine?

Terry.

Maybe I should go for the E320CDI, with all the Goodies on then?? what are they like on DIesel, Compared to the E270?

Stick with the 270. Just done a 1800 mile run with the E220CDi in France, most of it on motorway and got 32mpg  That was with a roof box, but still.....

Wish I'd gone for the bigger engine now. I got 47.6mpg but that was dawdling along at 60 on the mway, and 45 on rural roads. It did include crossing edinburgh at rush hour though.

PS its a lovely car the W211, your interior looks like a 60k miler inside, and its done 180k. Most cars die then, but Mercs aren't most cars :D

I wish I had gone for the E220CDI :D If you look at the factory fuel consumption figures, there still is a significant advantage for the E220CDI. It also has enough power for normal driving. Of course the few cases when you really want the car go, the 320CDI makes a difference. I've been hoping to have wife's gasser changed to a smaller CDI, perhaps C-class, for economy driving.

For me at least the engine power has always been enough, until I've bought a car with a bigger engine. :o It is so difficult to go backwards.

True, the 220cdi is fine and a great car, but his MPG's seemed better than mine (only 38.6 on average for me), and he had more power. I am aware the car revs to 2500rpm in normal driving and frequenty 3000rpm. Whilst it isn't underpowered I am aware it works quite hard to push the car along. I will get 50mpg from my E if it kills me :D

I never tried a 320cdi/280cdi/270cdi for that reason, as I'd find the lull of the power to great. If your "doing" a diesel , you may as well play to the strenghts of a diesel and go for the most economical one.

Seeing the inside of yours makes me realise I need to get my 85000 miler valeted!

One of my customers (a very tight one) has a E270CDI with 480,000 miles on it.

It drives so badly as all the shockers are knackerd and he never services it. It has not had an oil change for at least 50k.

It still looks like new on the inside. He only gets me to work on it when somthing goes wrong.

Shocking

Surley an Oil service is not THAT expensive in Portsmouth ??? ;)
Personally I see an Oil and filter change as a preventitive long term advantage.... I guess that this chap runs his car for Business purposes and needs to to make money? if so its madness not to service?

Pure madness. He has no clue.

I'm sure the other car had more highway driving than yours. The high mileage would hardly come from driving at London.

For comparable driving, the smaller engine would always give better results. The only case where the smaller engine could do worse is that you are driving constantly a steep uphill and you need to have full throttle. The optimum engine efficiency appears just a bit below the max power. You would probably end up driving 130 mph with the 220CDI then. It is a common misunderstanding that a bigger engine might consume less when it makes the car move effortlessly. This is true in relative terms but the same car body would need the same power to be driven (plus some extra for the additional weight from the bigger engine) and at normal driving, the bigger engine would always run at a worse efficiency range.

En example engine efficiency measurement attached. Unfortunately I did not find one for a CDI.

This is the best I ever saw in a 2005 E220CDI estate.
Makes the 42mpg of a 270CDI seem very believable:)

Thanks for all your Points, everyone, So it seems that I would be better off keeping the E270 then, Fuel Consumption (As the OBC reads) is good, there is more than enough power, as this car is for work (My Personal car has all the extra power that I need) It has and is covering the Miles Incredibly well and I have been told that I will struggle to Find an E220CDI with the Extras that I would like when I upgrade, ie; Sunroof, PDC, Comand, Drivers Memory seat, whereas, I have just Missed an E270 with all them Options except, I think, Memory Seat. Does anyone have an E320 CDI that can give me an Average Consumption Figure?

Once again, Thanks Everyone,

Regards,

Terry.

My E280CDI estate (same engine as the current E320) does 31 mpg with my wife running in and out of town, 40mpg with me driving out of town and a best ever of 47mpg being careful.
It has more go and better refinement than the 270 or the 220, but you pay for that at the pumps.
Your choice!:D

You've just given me a lot of confidence since I will shortly be moving from a 320 petrol to a 270 diesel....
