2005 E280 CDI SPORT
Hi

I am new to the forum!

I am in the process of buying a 2005 E280 CDI Sport registered in October 2005 and whilst looking into insurance and road tax a question has arisen about the cars engine size, insurance group and tax band.

Whilst looking on Parkers website I found that there are 2 options for E280 CDI Sport with the same description and manufacture dates however one shows the car to be 2987cc / 199gkm / 37cmpg / Group 16 / £235 tax. The other shows the car to be 2999cc / 232gkn / 27cmpg / group 17 / £425 tax.

Just wondering why there seems to be 2 different specs for the same car?

I havent collected the car yet so dont have the log book yet to check that but Im a little worried it might be the latter with the higher tax, will try asking the seller tomorrow! The cars details on the Autotrader website on the stats page show it to be the first, as did the cheapy £4.95 check I ran so hopefully its OK, but just curious about the variations in the figures for what appears to be the same model!

Thanks for any light shed!

Car is a dream and cant wait to collect it!

I can't comment on the specs - but the £425 figure assumes the car is registered on or after 23rd March 2006.

Yours is a 2005. It will be band J at £235 or or band K at £245.

Band K is where cars with >225g/km are placed if they are registered before 23rd March 2006.

Welcome to the forum. :)

The figures you have provided are for two different cars. One is for the E280 CDI, which is a diesel and the other is for the petrol powered E280 .

Hi Decky,

welcome to the forum!

I believe the 2996cc E280 is a petrol, not a diesel. If it is the diesel you've bought, then the lower tax, insurance etc will apply.

Diesel:
1 Jun 2005 -31 May 2006 (I suspect the most likely on an '05 reg):
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon - E280 CDI Sport 4d Tip Auto - Facts & Figures - Parker's

Petrol:
1 Jun 2005 -31 May 2006:
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon - E280 Sport 4d Tip Auto - Facts & Figures - Parker's

Hope this helps - and if it is the 280cdi, it is a smashing car (although I slightly miss the raw power of the E320cdi) - best of luck with it!

Cheers,
Eddie

E280cdi sport. Great choice of car. As said one set of figures will be for the petrol motor, the other the diesel one.

Beware the wee hours

Looking at the timestamps above: if midnight starts the Witching hour, then 1.00am must start the Merc-nerd hour where we lurk among the long stats :D:D:D...

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Duh looks like I was a bit stupid and looked at everything apart from the fuel type! Maybe I shouldn't be doing my research after midnight Fast_Eddie as Im not as alert as the mercnerds yet!

I used to drive a '99 E300 TD which had some sort of torque conversion issue in the box as it didnt like going up hills! When putting the foot down the revs would go up but it wouldn't drop gears and nothing happened at the wheels! Anyway thats all irrelevant now as some fecker went into the back of me 2wks ago and wrote it off! So back to the point, the E280CDI will have more than enough raw power for me!

Thats a big jump in tax for the 2006 car which i'll need to get used to before trading up again in 4-5yrs time!

Thanks again!

Hi,
I'm also looking to buy a 2005 e280cdi sport estate. Could anyone tell me if this year of car would have a straight or v6?

Is there anything in to avoid spec wise on of these?

Sorry for my ignorance.

Thanks

It could have been either, but most likely to be a V6. The IL6 E280CDI is quite rare and only made for a short period in 2005.

Look up the registration at the DVLA: if it's 3222cc it's the IL6; if 2987cc, it's the V6 (both number from memory so may not be exact).

All W211 Sports are V6, either in 280 or 320 CDI's.

So rare I don't think it was made at all! The 5 cylinder 270 CDi which sat just below the IL6 320 CDi was replaced by the V6 280 CDi which is in fact a 3 litre and is the same engine in a different state of tune to the v6 320 CDi. All 280 cdis will be V6 and a very fine engine it is too.

As above, V6. Nothing particularly to avoid, but a few things to try to make sure you get. COMAND is worth having, as is full leather (not sure if that was standard on the sport or not). A couple of family friendly options that will also hold some value are the extra seats in the back, making it a 7 seater, and the pop-up booster cushions on the outside seats on the rear bench. Parktronic (reversing aid) is stupidly expensive to retrofit, so worth keeping an eye open for that too.

Thanks for the responses...my old w210 straight 6 was superb so a v6 should be even better.

Am I correct in assuming a 55 plate would have the 5 speed auto box rather than the improved 7 speed? Is this something to avoid?

If you buy a V6 CDI W211, it will come with the very smooth 7G box.

Whilst SPX is right about Sports being V6 only, there was indeed an IL6 280CDI.

It's referred to on the German Wikipedia:

Mercedes-Benz Baureihe 211

Click on "Ausklappen" and note the two entries (OM648 / OM642) for the E280CDI.

The IL6 E280CDI had a VIN starting with WDB211x23; the V6 E280CDI started WDB211x20 (where x is 0 for saloon and 2 for estate).

Was it avalable in the UK though?

There are various engine variants of models that are targeted at other markets. Eg, W211 E250.

Who said 7g is an improvement. It's not and I've driven numerous examples of seven and five speed cars.

Any V6 diesel car will have 7g.

A word of wisdom. The 55reg V6 cars were about the 1st ones released. Numerous improvements to the engine were subsequently made. Turbo seals and manifolds. Mine cost over £2500 in repairs alone to the engine due to the substandard design and parts used in the engine. Be careful.

Sadly the engine is really good when it performs and isn't lighting up warning lights and going into limp mode. The test drive will probably sucker most into buying it as economy, refinement and performance are excellent.
