E280 CDI Sport - Confussed about car details!

Was it avalable in the UK though?
.

Quite possibly not. I believe the OM647 IL5 was dropped to avoid having to make it Eu4 compliant; Germany has a record for offering incentives for early compliance, so perhaps the detuned-IL6 E280CDI was a temporary German special to take advantage of that.

Seem to recall someone had one in an earlier thread: I'll see if I can dig that up to see where it was.

If the manifold and turbo seals are replaced is it a good reliable engine? It does have a full MB service history - whether that's a good or bad is another thing.

The seller tells me it is a V6 but has a 6 spd auto?!?

Thanks

Other than those faults the engine bearings can go but it's not very common. Service history is a must.

I found that my 2006 E280CDI was very prone to getting backed in to by large trucks.....
But the engine and 7 speed gearbox were fantastic for all the miles I used it....;)

No 6 speed box! V6 will be 7 speed. Possibly the vendor is confused by the display. If you are manually overriding the auto box, the display shows 1,2,3 etc, up to 6 and then D.

As with all cars, there are good 'uns and bad 'uns. Steve, ***, definitely had a bad one. But many other people n this forum have had really good experiences with the V6. Mine is an early one, on 55 plate. I have just had the inlet port shutoff motor replaced ( which is a common enough fault), and that cost me £475 at an Indy. And that's all that has gone wrong with the engine which is now reading over 100k miles.

Hi, I have a 2005 (55) w211 E280 V6 3.0 CDi 80 k. Only had it 6 months and it has cost me mainly on gearbox sensor and alt =£1800.
Also recently car would judder on harsh acceleration, took to MB and it needs a new inlet port shut off motor. Hoping this will be the end of it all , would you say this was a good year to go for ? I thought with this V6 w211 things were improved on the old.

Thanks

Sounds a dud. Early editions of an engine can prove problematic. The gearbox sensor is a common one on 7g boxes and requires the whole valve body to be changed, such is the poor design and engineering behind the 7g transmission.

Again the inlet port shut off motor fault is common. They'll feel you crap about revised seals but it's just a weak spot in that engine. Normally a tiny weeping or leak of oil really wouldnt be an issue but again substandard design puts the swirl flap motor in the path of leaking oil. A better preventative maintaince is to have that area cleaned every service and every second service have the seals replaced.

Another issue is blocked manifolds, it can happen and it's nearly two grand.

Many praise the V6, power, refinement and economy are great but they are more fickle than the 220 and 270 series of engines.

yep , hoping this will be the end of it, need my lotto numbers to come up :thumb:

Why does this post remind me of one of mine when I had a 2005 E320cdi sport which bar 30bhp is the exact same car as you.

The issues I had were relentless. I went from loving the car to actively hating the sight of it and dreaded having to travel in it for fear of breakdown.

yes I must say the feeling of dread is beginning to come to play with me.

When I first got the car I was very happy but that was short lived, I had a Passat before it and had no probs with it.

I feel for a humble working class lad like me it is a car made for someone who earns more money then I do , alot more:(

It might just be a bad car. Mine went through between me and warranty £6000 in 2yrs.

It consumed way to much money and I had the same dread as you. Want some advice.? Get rid of it.

You ain't. And for the record I wish I took your advice sooner to get rid of my shed.

Funnily enough someone emailed me today as they found my email address on the forum asking about v6 and 7g. Turns out cr4p from their manifold got into the turbo. New manifold and turbo needed. £3000. Ouch.

After that bill the chap will struggle to part with it and it's a CLS and they are lovely. That's the problem with bad posh cars, they are so good when they work you can't bare to get rid and that the outlay in repairs makes you think it's all sorted. But it ain't, bad high cars just act up and act up.

To both the OP and the fella that emailed me. Sell it and move on. I'm in a C220 estate sports and it's just as comfy and drives better and hasn't given me one bill. This time with the E320 I was on my 1st replacement shut off motor and unfuxable gearbox fault. More hell was to follow

Years later I must say once these issues where dealt with it was fine and I still have it. Nothing has gone wrong for 6 yeras apart from wear and tear :)

Hi

I am new to the forum!

I am in the process of buying a 2005 E280 CDI Sport registered in October 2005 and whilst looking into insurance and road tax a question has arisen about the cars engine size, insurance group and tax band.

Whilst looking on Parkers website I found that there are 2 options for E280 CDI Sport with the same description and manufacture dates however one shows the car to be 2987cc / 199gkm / 37cmpg / Group 16 / £235 tax. The other shows the car to be 2999cc / 232gkn / 27cmpg / group 17 / £425 tax.

Just wondering why there seems to be 2 different specs for the same car?

I havent collected the car yet so dont have the log book yet to check that but Im a little worried it might be the latter with the higher tax, will try asking the seller tomorrow! The cars details on the Autotrader website on the stats page show it to be the first, as did the cheapy £4.95 check I ran so hopefully its OK, but just curious about the variations in the figures for what appears to be the same model!

Thanks for any light shed!

Car is a dream and cant wait to collect it!
