Under the cover N/S of engine bay in the scuttle.

I've checked under the cover & there appears to be no added bits!!

What I've noticed is that there seems to smoke out of the exhaust when accelerating hard - not noticed in daylight but when it's dark you can see it in the headlights of the car behind. I take it this means too much fuel being injected.

Any ideas on where to look next?

I filled the tank yesterday to check and zeroed the trip, I'll
clock it to the light comes on and let you know what it does.

Colin mine is the same at night you can sometimes see it when its highlighted in the lights of a car behind you, but only when she gets full welly....300 mile round trip the other week to wales on 1/2 a tank ,but i noticed in a thread that they get about 100 miles when filled to the brim and it just drops to the full mark ...same here are you filling it to the max, also I only ever use SHELL DIESEL EXTRA +MILLERS DIESEL POWER + on each fill up nothing else...don;t like supermarket fuel its just a personal thing

Thanks for info. I've just returned from a weekend away @ Bosworth Hall which is a round trip of 260 miles 99% on motorway & it's returned 28mpg!!

I'll try a different petrol station when this tank gets low - shouldn't be too long at this rate!!

have you checked your tyre pressures to see that they are not low ?

230K, you get 100 miles before the 3/4 mark?

I'm normally an urban driver, 20-50 mph in medium traffic and get 100 miles per quarter tank, maxing at 420 miles per tankful = 30mpg.
But on a rare motorway trip averaging 70 mph the fuel dial drops far slower = 33-34mpg.

Has anyone got better fuel economy?

The best I have ever got is 34mpg. Recently I've been getting closer to 30 but half way through the last tank I changed the air filter and got 32 so I'm expecting 33-34 on this tank. I have started keeping a log and after a few more tanks I'll be in a position to say what difference if any AC makes, additives make etc as my journey is very consistent! 99 E300TD est

Don't forget it is winter and the engine takes longer to warm up using more fuel.

Jonny

As the needle on the guage just drops below the full mark 100miles, 200 by 3/4 and ~ 300-330 by the time it drops just below the half mark. I commute 83 miles per day very little traffic cruise set at 60-65mph for 70% of journey. And yes my economy drops in the winter approx 2mpg i put it down to lights on morning and night and longer warm up periods.

My C250D does its job between 38-43mpg (70km commute to capital, rare traffic jams, between 60-100km/h). The fuel economy have not been changed in winter (we had weeks with -5, -15 Celsius). So 250-280km to 3/4 mark, 480-500km to half.

It did 380 miles from brim to the yellow fuel light coming on, but that did include a 200 mile motorway trip.

I've just started a new tankfull and have wringed out 83 miles before needle dropped off the full mark, 270 at the 1/2 mark, still going.

Hi

I must get more in the tank, drop below full at ~100 and 300-330 before it drops below 1/2.

Just managed to squeeze 71.24 litres into the 210 this evening worked out at only 32.7mpg this fill, i will keep u posted how this tank goes.

Couldn't really say, i assume you mean in 5th although i would say mine would have changed down at that speed.

2000rpm is about 60mph.

230K

rpm

on a flat road it should hold in 5th @ 29mph and be just on or over 1000 rpm somthing Dieselman said in a post, i think its a kind of easy ref point for the engine and gearbox, incase its not going into 5th thus increasing fuel consumption

My 1999 E300 turbo-diesel seems to never go above 30mpg no matter how gently I drive it! I do use it a lot abroad and on a high speed ~100mph run it does about 25mpg but if I stick to 70mph it does 30mpg at the most. The amusing thing I found once was on a Autobahn run in Germany where i sat at between 100mph and 120mph for hours - on this occasion it gave me 29mpg whereas on the following day I drove at 80mph for hours in Holland and it did 27mpg! All my calculations were done by brimming the car and reseting the trip each time so they should be pretty accurate. I've tried a fuel system flush, new fuel filter, engine oil flush, different engine oil, new air filter, different tyres, every possible tyre pressure combination, fuel additives, aircon on & off, winter mode, summer mode etc... and it always stays the same.

I'm going to try changing the gearbox oil next month (it jerks a bit between 3rd and 2nd gear on the downshift anyway) and also have the badly repaired serpentine belt tensioning pulley fixed (it squeals a bit when cold). I don't see how either of these could improve the consumption but I'll let you know if it does!
