My 07 E320CDI is slower to start than my previous pre facelift 53 reg model. Is it normal for the V6 to take longer to start than the straight 6. It only takes a few seconds, but the previous model was instantaneous. (the V6 is much smoother and nicer engine though :) )

Thanks

Harvey

Anyone any thoughts, do I need to take it in to a dealer?

For several days we used the ML320CDI and it was just as quick as the straight 6 on our E-class.

I have noticed that my ML320 CDI with it's V6 diesel engine is slightly slower to start than my old W211 E320 CDI with it's straight 6 engine.
As you say it's not much of a difference but the new engine is definately slower to start from cold.

I have noticed no real difference between the straight 6 of my E320CDI and the V6 of the CLS320CDI.

i even thought they were all v6 in the 211
:D Stupid boy :)
The new face-lift 211 saw the introduction of the 3ltr V6

The 211 had a 5cyl diesel (270)and a 3.2 litre inline 6 (320) option from 2003. These were superceeded by the 3 litre V6 in late 2005 in either 320CDI or 280CDI guise which continued in to the facelift model in Sept 2006.:D

:) I think you are the first person I have heard about that has the V6 diesel in the older 211.

EU4 spec in-line 320's were also an extremely rare option that I don't think came into the country or if so it came in, in extremely small numbers. Thinking as I am typing, I wonder if they put the updated engines into pre-facelift vehicles to comply with EU$ spec? (question)

I think that the V6 was just going to become the brand diesel power plant in 2005.

I became very aware of this record as a prepared for a 24hr road car speed record attempt for the Bentley Flyig Spur.
I think it was this which sealed my choice of engine and I now have two;)

I suppose that we are all waiting for the little orange glow plug light to go out before keying the starter like model citizens?

I followed that acheivement with great interest. The cars were specially built for the task, flown across to America (because of the 'anti' diesel attitude) and then let loose to make this record. I note there is no mention of the fuel also being shipped from Europe and likewise when the ML drove across the American continent when it competed against the LX. The US market is way ahead of us when it comes to the diesel development and I tend to take with a pinch of salt this record.

Incidentally they have had the Bluetech diesel for some time

I can understand how a record set in the States with a non specified fuel could be 'taken with a pinch of salt'
However, this was done to FIA standards and under observation which means that the cars would have been randomly picked from the production line to be eligible and the fuel would have to meet FIA standards for production diesel. The only items allowed to be changed are those which effect safety. (Roll cage etc.) I have been involved in quite a few record attempts and 24hr race wins (not Top Gear type!) and the outside world has little or no idea the amount of effort, technology and resource goes into these. Trust me, these guys from Mercedes really did it right, and I understand the scale of that achievement.
